Residential Routers - What You Need to Know!
By far, the most effective means of putting a small home or office network
on a shared network connection is by using a residential router. Also
called a DSL/Cable router, broadband router, or SOHO router. These low cost
routers allow a simple network to share an Internet connection. They also
provide more than adequate security for most users.
These routers usually have an Ethernet jack to connect with a DSL or other
types of broadband modems and another Ethernet ports (or a built in switch)
to support the network. Some models even include support for wireless
networking.
Most routers come pre-configured to use DHCP (a protocol for automatically
assigning IP addresses) and then in turn, support the internal network
using automatically assigned addresses. You can literally plug them in and
go in many cases. Setting a residential router up for a static IP address
and if necessary, to use a routed network is still a fairly simple task.
(Please note, when adding wireless to a network, it is important to enable
encryption so that not just anyone with a wireless card can use your
Internet connection).
Some routers may also include features that report on or simply block
certain types of connections. Access to websites, online games, and more
can be monitored or, if necessary, prevented.
There are few drawbacks to using a residential router. The worst being that
setting up a server for mail, web, or games requires a minor configuration
adjustment called "Port Redirecting", where specific types of traffic are
sent to specific machines within the private network. Most home users would
never need to use that feature, and many security conscious network owners
don't consider that to be a drawback at all.
Many residential routers can be found for less than $100. Add a $50
external modem for a backup (or primary) Internet connection and you have
to ask yourself, can you afford not to have one?

Popup Blocker!
Connect to the new IINet Popup Blocker on line:
http://help.iinet.com/popup-blocker.php
We also have some FAQs for you on the Popup Blocker. Please go to FAQs on
this new product (http://help.iinet.com/faq.php) and click on the text link
"IINet Popup Blocker" in the "Browsing the Web FAQ" section.
Setup SpamAssassin!
After logging to UserConsole (https://console.iinet.com), click on Email
Tools then select Email Filtering from the drop down menu.
SpamAssassin is pretty effective. It resides on Infinity Internet's server,
so there is nothing to download. You pick keywords that you do not want to
get. Then you decide whether to mark the mail as Spam and it will be
deleted before you ever see it.
