This week we play on Love and Valentine’s Day to bring you a romantic
selection of wines. We thought next Friday was too close to the day,
so come this week and buy a treat for your sweet!

1. We start with a fizzy pink wine, LAMBRUSCO. No, forget RIUNITE,
this is serious wine. From ITALY’S EMILIA-ROMAGNA we will taste
VILLA di CORLO LAMBRUSCO GRASPAROSSA di CASTELVETRO “AMABILE”.
Amabile means “lovable” and you and your significant other will love
this wine. Villa di Corlo make several Lambruscos and this one has a
little residual sugar. However think of it as soft and round rather
than sweet. I agree with Matt Kramer in a recent “rave” in the
Sunday Oregonian when he said “This is a superb, artisanal version of
Lambrusco, the sort you used to have to visit a farm in the Emilia-
Romagna region to obtain” - $12.50

2. SAINT-AMOUR is one of the ten BEAUJOLAIS CRUS, and what better
name for Valentine’s Day! GEORGES DUBŒUF is known as the King of
Beaujolais and maintains a very good quality for all his wines. His
2006 SAINT-AMOUR is drinking very well at the moment. It has that
lovely, seductive, GAMAY NOIR fruit - what more do you need on
Valentine’s Day? - $13.25

3. Our next wine is from the CÔTES-du-RHÔNE VILLAGES. From the
village of CHUSCLAN comes the 2004 MELODIE d’AMOUR. Made at CHATEAU
SIGNAC by the winemaker from great CHÂTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE producer
CHÂTEAU LA NERTHE, this wine is a blend of 50% GRENACHE, 30% SYRAH,
10% CARIGNAN and 10% CINSAULT. The wine was backward at release, but
now blossoms in the glass and might become even better in another
year - $17.75

4. For the final wine in the flight we go to the NAPA VALLEY. We
offer TERRA VALENTINE 2005 CABERNET SAUVIGNON, SPRING MOUNTAIN
DISTRICT. When I bought the shop in 2003 I carried this producer for
about a year, but then the distributor dropped the wine and it
disappeared from my radar screen. Now with another distributor, I
welcome the wines back to the shop. From a winery and vineyard
located at about 2100ft. on Spring Mountain, this is a powerful, yet
elegant, wine. A blend of 95% CABERNET SAUVIGNON from 14 different
vineyard blocks on the Estate vineyards, 3% MERLOT and 2% CABERNET
FRANC, the wine was aged for about 20 months in French oak barrels of
which 33% were new. With a bright core of plum and berry fruit, the
wine is made complex by an intriguing nose showing cedar and
bittersweet chocolate, and a finish showing dried fig and cocoa - $33.50

For this week’s PREMIUM POUR we offer a vintage Port. Curl-up in
front of the fire with your loved one, grab some chocolates and
enjoy. Until they run out, we will offer chocolates on Friday.

2003 was a very powerful vintage in OPORTO, and the wines will
benefit from some cellaring. However I was offered some WARRE’S 2003
at a substantial discount and so buy while you can at these prices
(which are for current stock only).

information is based on verbal information from distributors, and

We will have at least one interesting wine open, including the
following:

To me, most American VIOGNIERS are either too high in alcohol or too
sweet. When we can sell a VIOGNIER from the Languedoc that has great
aromatics, good mouth feel, is dry, and is under 13% alcohol and
under $10, why can’t we do it here? Finally I’ve found a CALIFORNIA
wine that can match my French favorite. The OAK GROVE 2007 VIOGNIER
RESERVE was in the Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 Bargains of 2008. It
has lovely aromatics, good fruit, and is dry and “only” 13% alcohol.
This is a BARGAIN - $8.50

Cheers,
