WHITE WINES
VIN du LAC 2005 LEHM RIESLING, MICHAELA’S VINEYARD, CHELAN COUNTY,
WASHINGTON
Regular Price $21.00 This Month
$17.50
Pre-paid Case Price $200.00 ($16.67.00/bottle)
How many of you have tasted a wine from LAKE CHELAN in WASHINGTON?
Pauline and I had not until we stopped at Lake Chelan for two days
while on the way to the Okanagan Valley in 2007. One of the
wineries we visited was VIN du LAC, and finally their wines are
distributed in Oregon. This is their first vintage of DRY RIESLING
using Lake fruit. They tasted me on the 2006, but the local
distributor delivered the 2005. I’ve talked to the winery and they
say the 2005 is better than the 2006 at the moment, and is selling at
the winery as a “library wine” at over $40/bottle. The style is to
offer aromatic fruit on the nose, mainly green apple but with apricot
nuances. There is an intense fruit core on mid-palate and this is
followed by a crisp, very dry, finish.
PRAVIS LE FRATE 2007 NOSIOLA, ALTO ADIGE, ITALY
Regular Price $13.50 This Month
11.50
Pre-paid Case Price $130.00 ($10.83/bottle)
NOSIOLA is a grape native to Italy’s TRENTINO region, but this wine
comes from just further north in the foothills of the Dolomites in
ALTO ADIGE. It carries an IGT VIGNETI delle DOLOMITI. Originally
mainly used for Vin Santo, the varietal is now coming into its own as
a dry white. The name means “wild hazelnuts”, and there are hazelnut
nuances in the flavors. There is also salinity and mineral on the
finish. Lovely with seafood and certain salads.
RED WINES
BOEDECKER CELLARS 2007 GRENACHE, ROGUE VALLEY, OREGON
Regular Price $24.00 This Month
$20.50
Pre-paid Case Price $230.00 ($19.17/bottle)
Maybe this month we are looking for “firsts” – this is the first 100%
GRENACHE I’ve tasted from Oregon fruit, although I know others have
been available. Athena Papas and Stewart Boedecker, the couple that
own the winery, have been making some interesting Pinot Noirs. The
ones under Stewart’s name tend to be more Burgundian in style, those
under Athena’s are more the intense fruit style – most of you will
know which I prefer! On this GRENACHE they must have got together as
the nose is very RHÔNE in style, but the palate has lots of exuberant
black raspberry fruit, very typical of Grenache.
IPPOLITO 2006 LIBER PATER CIRO ROSSO CLASSICO SUPERIORE, CALABRIA ITALY
Regular Price $11.50 This Month
$9.75
Pre-paid Case Price $110.00 ($9.17/bottle)
This is the “entry level” Rosso from IPPOLITO 1845. From CALABRIA
(the “toe” of Italy), these Rossos are 100% GAGLIOPPO, a grape just
being discovered by USA consumers. The wine has a slightly floral
nose of violets and rose hips. The palate offers black fruit,
licorice and tar, and the wine goes well with spicy pasta dishes and
strong meats such as game.
We also have IPPOLITO’S top-of-the-line 1996 RIPE de FALCO, normally
$40.00, which this month we offer current stock at $35.00 (no further
discounts apply).
This week I tasted five of IPPOLITO’s wines over lunch with VINCENZO
IPPOLITO Jr., the great, great grandson of the founder. All the
wines are lovely. The winery is the oldest continually operating
winery in Calabria.
We plan to have the wines open (other than the 1996 Ripe de Falco)
for free tasting on Saturday, February 14th.
Cheers,
Pauline and Mick
