THIS WEEK
FRIDAY, November 21st
4:30 - 7:00pm

This week we are not offering a cheese or pâté plate, but will have,
while supplies last, some sliced turkey breast to serve as a backdrop
to our “turkey” wines, plus some cranberry salad.

As far as wine, it almost seems as though anything goes on a
Thanksgiving table. Pauline and I always associate Beaujolais and dry
rosé with Thanksgiving because this is what my first boss in the USA
poured when he invited us to his home for Thanksgiving dinner. As
usual we will offer a variety of wines from whites, through a rosé,
to reds.

1. If turkey was the only component of the meal, the great matches
are PINOT BLANC and PINOT GRIS. We normally pour a PINOT BLANC, but
this year switch to PINOT GRIS. For four years, our biggest selling
local PINOT GRIS has been J. ALBIN. We offer the 2007. John, also
the current wine maker at King Estate, makes very good red, white and
sparkling wines. His own PINOT GRIS is fuller on mid-palate than the
one he makes for King Estate - $16.00

For those who desire a PINOT BLANC, we have in stock the JEAN SIPP
2006 from ALSACE, together with several other Alsace whites that
would work wonderfully with turkey.

2. Another white we have used in the past is GEWÜRZTRAMINER as the
spicy quality of the wine can stand up to some of the meal’s side
dishes. Once more we look local rather than to the natural homes of
the grape, Alto Adige and Alsace. NAMASTÉ VINEYARDS are from near
Salem, and we offer their 2006 HARMONY VINEYARD GEWÜRZTRAMINER. If
you like dry Gewürztraminer, this is the bargain wine for you! I’m
not claiming it is the equivalent to Trimbach or even Anderson
Valley’s Handley (both in stock), but at its reduced price it is the
best value in the market place today. It offers classic fruit
together with a lovely dry, spicy finish WAS $12.00 – NOW $9.00

3. Our ROSÉ this year comes from PROVENCE. CHÂTEAU COUSSIN is part
of a family group that also owns the SUMEIRE wines that have been
very popular in the shop. Their SAINTE VICTOIRE 2007 CÔTES de
PROVENCE ROSÉ offers all a Provence Rosé should – a delicate pink
color, but more fruit and body than the color would suggest. A blend
of GRENACHE and CINSAULT, this is the ultimate Thanksgiving Rosé -
$15.00

4. While I know it is BEAUJOLAIS NOUVEAU time, we offer a “normal”
BEAUJOLAIS. The LOUIS LATOUR 2006 BEAUJOLAIS-VILLAGES “CHAMEROY” is
one of the finest Beaujolais-Villages wine I’ve tasted in some time.
It is the match of some more expensive CRU BEAUJOLAIS. It is richer,
more powerful and much more complex than most Beaujolais-Villages
wines. Drink now to enjoy the intense fruit, but I’m going to cellar
a few bottles to see how it develops - $13.50

5. ZINFANDEL is also popular for Thanksgiving - maybe an American
wine for an American holiday. We will pour the MAZZOCCO 2005 PONY
ZINFANDEL, DRY CREEK VALLEY. I’ve not tasted this wine but have
relied on customer input and its 90 point score in the Wine
Spectator. It is a blend of 97% ZINFANDEL and 3% PETITE SIRAH from
the terraced vineyards of the Dry Creek Valley, and there are several
rave reviews on the web. Also the pricing sites showed the lowest
price at $34.95. Our local distributor is no longer going to carry
this producer because of a big price increase and has discounted this
wine. Buy at a bargain price! - $28.00

For this week’s PREMIUM POUR we return once again to OREGON:

JAY SOMERS at J. CHRISTOPHER makes lovely red and white wines and we
have carried nearly all of them. CHARLIE’S VINEYARD is one of his
more expensive PINOT NOIRS and we offer the 2006 (some got to taste
it last week when we ran out of the NZ Pinot Noir). The vineyard is
in the DUNDEE HILLS AVA, but the wine shows more black cherry than
the traditional red fruit shown by many wines from this AVA. While
Jay aims more to Burgundy than many Oregon producers, this wine is
typical of the 2006 vintage as it shows forward intense fruit.
However the wine is beautifully balanced, and should age well - $39.75

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 Ounces

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.

SATURDAY, November 22nd
Noon – 5:00PM
FREE TASTING

As usual we will have something interesting and/or spectacular value
open.

We are thinking about the 337 WINE CELLARS 2006 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
$13.00/bottle
Special case price $114.00 (=$9.50/bottle)
Current stock only!
Free gift bags with purchase – but not the wooden display case!
Not as big as the 2005, this wine from LODI is lush and seductive,
but also has a solid backbone. INCREDIBLE VALUE AT THE CASE PRICE.

Cheers,

Pauline & Mick
