CHEESE PLATE
Once more we rely on our favorite NY web site to suggest cheeses to
go with Pinot Noir. This week we offer a soft cheese for the first
time – in the past we thought they were too “messy” to serve, but our
NY source recommends Camembert for Pinot Noir. All cheeses were
purchased from Whole Paycheck.
Camembert Le Châtelain Cow’s Milk
Normandy, France
The next cheese we tried to find was Vacherin from Switzerland, but
Whole Paycheck is not currently stocking it. They recommended this
other Swiss cheese which, although we have used it recently, is a
good match for Pinot Noir:
Appenzeller Raw Cow’s
Milk Switzerland
This Alpine cheese separates itself from run-of-the-mill Gruyere by
its production method where the wheels are bathed in a solution of
herbs and liquors which gives a herbaceous, nutty flavor, and a milky
finish.
The following is our favorite cheese for Pinot Noir:
Les Trois Contois Morbier Cow’s
Milk Franche-Comté, France
This cheese is recommended as a great accompaniment to red Burgundy.
Ignore the strong smell as it is a mild cheese with a pleasant nutty
aftertaste. The cheese is made in two wheels that are joined by
edible vegetable ash.
CHEESE SAMPLER PLATE $5.00
We have had several requests to do another tasting of drinkable Pinot
Noir that are under $20 a bottle. Despite the outrageous pricing of
some Oregon Pinot Noirs, I finished with a list of about twelve lower
priced wines that I deemed good value. There were also a few I would
not drink at any price! This is a week when I think you should not
be influenced by my European palate, so I am not giving my usual
tasting notes, just saying where the wines come from.
1. We had to include a foreign wine to show that, despite the weak
dollar, there are deals out there. We start in BURGUNDY, the home of
Pinot Noir, and the fabulous 2005 vintage. Except in vintages such
as 2005, most BOURGOGNE ROUGE are too “thin” and “acidic” for the
average USA palate. See what you think of this offering from
MOILLARD - $13.50
2. DURANT VINEYARD dates back to the 1973 and they have been selling
fruit to many top Oregon producers including Domaine Drouhin, Lange,
Bergstrom, Ponzi and Hammacher. A small amount is now made under
their own label by ADEA’s Dino Fisher, and we will taste the 2005
from the LARK VINEYARD in the DUNDEE HILLS AVA - $17.75
3. I do not know how many ownership changes SILVER FALLS WINERY has
gone through since I first tasted wines under this label at the 1989
IPNC, but the current releases are good value. The 2005 ESTATE GROWN
WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR was produced at Château Bianca and is
better than that producer’s own wines! - $15.00
4. I went to the “Indie Wine Tasting” the other week and, on the
whole, I was “underwhelmed” when price was taken into account.
However a few wines seemed to offer great value, and my favorite was
the BISHOP’S CREEK 2006 BARREL SELECT from the YAMHILL-CARLTON AVA.
Let’s see if you agree - $18.50
5. We have sold a lot of LA DOLCE VITA wines and thought their 2005
WILLAMETTE VALLEY PINOT NOIR was sold-out. It is not, and it is now
showing very well. Because of our long-time relationship with the
producer, we can offer the wine at a very attractive price - $16.50
(normally $19.75)
TRY THESE FIVE WINES FOR $10.00
In keeping with our “less than $20 theme” there will be no PREMIUM
POUR this week.
NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.
SATURDAY, May 24th
Noon – 5:00PM
Free
As usual we will have a couple of wines open and the red is a Matt
Kramer “rave” (last week we were to have the red open but we sold it
all before Saturday!):
New products in the Oregon market are the wines under the SEVEN
DAUGHTERS label from CALIFORNIA. These are non-vintage blends of,
guess what, seven grape varietals. The white is very aromatic (from
Muscat), has great fruit on mid-palate, and a dryish finish. A
lovely summer (when it arrives) sipper, and a good accompaniment to
most shell-fish, salads and some Asian food - $12.00
DOMAINE BRUSSET 2006 CÔTES DU VENTOUX “LES BOUDALLES” is a blend of
GRENACHE (60 percent), MOURVÈDRE (15 percent), CARIGNAN (15 percent)
and CLAIRETTE (10 percent) from a 12.3-acre vineyard near the town of
Carpentras. Matt Kramer says “It delivers an unusual depth of flavor
for this appellation, with raspberry and red cherry notes and some
real backbone thanks to the employment of Mourvèdre, a grape not
commonly used in Côtes du Ventoux because it’s low yielding” - $10.00
