CORNELL WINE COMPANY
MAY WINES OF THE MONTH SPECIALS

As announced last week, we are discontinuing our Monthly Wine Club in
its present form. It has been replaced by “Wines-of-the-Month”
offered to all customers at special discounts.

These prices are valid for the whole month. NO FURTHER DISCOUNTS
APPLY. If the wines are used as part of a mixed-case they will count
as bottles towards the case with the regular priced wines receiving
the normal mixed-case discount. Full cases of one wine-of-the-month
receive an additional discount for pre-paid orders.

BARBI 2007 ORVIETO CLASSICO SECCO

Regular Price $11.50 This Month
$9.80
Pre-paid Case Price $112.00 ($9.33/bottle)

Orvieto was like many Italian white wine areas in that it “shot
itself in the foot” by exporting lots of mediocre wines. Now some
good, modestly priced wines are available. While Palazzone’s Orvieto
has been the shop’s favorite, it now has a challenger from Barbi.
This is a very refreshing wine, offering green apple and citrus
elements, followed by a crisp, minerally finish.

EVESHAM WOOD 2007 BLANC du PUITS SEC

Regular Price $14.00 This Month
$11.90
Pre-paid Case Price $136.00 ($11.33/bottle)

Russ Raney used to make one of Oregon’s best dry Gewürztraminer from
Estate fruit. Unfortunately he decided the commercial return was not
enough to compensate for the effort needed to produce and sell the
wine. He is now using the grapes for the “Estate White” which this
year is a blend of 85% Pinot Gris and 15% Gewürztraminer. This is a
lovely wine for warmer weather – when it arrives!

CASTELLO della PANARETTA 2004 CHIANTI CLASSICO

Regular Price $19.50 This Month
$16.60
Pre-paid Case Price $189.00 ($15.75/bottle)

The local importer, Greg Zancanella, negotiated a good deal with the
producer so that the wine was priced at €1.00 = $1.32 instead of
today’s $1.56. This is why we can offer a Chianti Classico from an
excellent producer from a great vintage at less than $20.00 At our
wine-of-the-month pricing it is stupendous value. Panaretta is a
traditional Chianti producers and uses only “native” grapes – there
is no Merlot in this wine! While the wine shows some tannins, it is
lovely with food now, but will continue to evolve over the next few
years.

SWANSON 2004 ESTATE MERLOT, OAKVILLE, NAPA VALLEY

Regular Price $32.50 This Month
$27.65
Pre-paid Case Price $315.00 ($26.25/bottle)

The fruit for this wine comes from a clay soil vineyard near the Napa
River. It is a beautifully structured Merlot. The wine offers pure
black current and plum fruit beautifully balanced by earthy tannins.
While luscious and mellow, there is enough backbone to match rich
beef dishes. It is one of the best Merlots I’ve tasted this year.
It was rated “exceptional” by Wine & Spirits magazine.

We plan to have the wines open for free tasting on Saturday, May 10th.

Cheers,
