PETITE SIRAH

CHEESE PLATE
To go with these hearty wines, we offer a selection of Cheddar Cheeses:
Aged 18 Months - Australia
Cabot Extra Sharp - Vermont
Dubliner - Ireland
CHEESE SAMPLER PLATE $2.50

It is a mystery how a grape got to be called PETITE SIRAH when it is
not petite when it comes to flavor and body, and it has no connection
with the noble varietal, SYRAH. The vine was propagated in the late
19th century in France by a nurseryman named DR. DURIF, and the grape
is known as DURIF in FRANCE and AUSTRALIA. CALIFORNIA has by far the
most acreage of the grape; 100% varietals are made and it is also
used to blend with ZINFANDEL (Ridge being a great believer in such
blending). The wines at this week’s tasting will all be from
CALIFORNIA except for the Premium Pour which is from OREGON. I have
not tasted the current vintages of all these wines and have relied on
recommendations of customers and other people.

1. RED TRUCK is a label that was started by CLINE but is now owned by
585 WINE PARTNERS. However the wines are still made by CLINE’S wine
maker. After the original RED WINE, the brand now has several red
and white wines. The latest is the 2006 CALIFORNIA PETITE SIRAH.
The wine is made from organically grown grapes from CENTRAL COAST and
MENDOCINO COUNTY vineyards. Despite its rich, lush fruit and hints
of pepper and spices, this wine has modest alcohol for a Petite Sirah
(about 13.5%) - $10.00

2. DAVID BRUCE WINERY has been making PETITE SIRAH about as long as
any winery (since the late 1960s) and the production is second only
to their Pinot Noir. Their 2005 CENTRAL COAST is made from PASO
ROBLES and MONTEREY fruit and was aged in a mix of used French and
American oak. The winery likes to accentuate the aromatics of the
grape, just as they do with Pinot Noir - $18.75

3. FOPPIANO VINEYARDS is a family-owned winery that has been making
wine in the RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY for over 100 years. The 2004 ESTATE
PETITE SIRAH is a full-bodied wine with intense fruit and lots of
spice on the palate and toasty vanillans on the finish from the new
American oak barrels used for aging - $18.75

4. We now move up in scale (as far as alcohol is concerned) as the
next wine comes in at a hefty 15.4%. LAVA CAP winery is in the
SIERRA FOOTHILLS and their wines carry the EL DORADO AVA. The 2004
GRANITE HILL VINEYARD RESERVE PETITE SIRAH won “Best of Show Red” at
the Orange County Fair, and many other awards. The wine is very dark
in color and has an intense nose of blackberries with touches of
anise and chocolate. The palate is lush with fruit and sweet oak,
and these lead to a long finish – 26.50

For our PREMIUM POUR come home to OREGON:

CARPENTER HILL VINEYARD is situated southeast of Jacksonville in
OREGON’S ROGUE VALLEY AVA. The vineyard is at 1650 feet elevation,
faces southeast, and has a mix of clay loam soil with slate and
shale. Most of the fruit is sold to other wineries (including Syrah
to Domaine Serene for their Rock Block label), but they now make
small amounts of wine under their own label. This is the first
PETITE SIRAH I’ve tasted from OREGON. It is full-bodied as well as
being elegant at the same time. The wine shows both blackberry and
black cherry elements, well-integrated oak, and a long finish - $36.50

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.00/Taste or $7.50/4 ounces

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.

As always we will have a couple of wines open. This week’s
provisional choices are the “entry level” wines from WASHINGTON’S
GORDON BROTHERS. We have carried earlier vintages of these wines.

The KAMIAK 2006 CELLAR SELECT WHITE is a COLUMBIA VALLEY blend of
SAUVIGNON BLANC, CHARDONNAY and GEWÜRZTRAMINER - $9.00

The KAMIAK 2005 CELLAR SELECT RED is a COLUMBIA VALLEY blend of
CABERNET SAUVIGNON and MERLOT - $12.00
