WASHINGTON REDS
PÂTÉ PLATE
This week to go with big WASHINGTON REDS, we are offering a pâté
plate instead of the usual cheese plate:
Country Pâté Pork/Pork Liver/Black
Pepper/Champagne
Pork Pâté Pork/Veal/Figs
Venison Pâté Venison/Sun-dried
Cherries/Hazelnuts
PÂTÉ SAMPLER PLATE $5.00
At one stage I was just going to do a Washington Syrah tasting, but
the price of these wines would have made it a more expensive tasting
than usual. Instead, we offer a selection of varietals from several
different regions.
1. We start with one of the great value producers from WASHINGTON,
SAGELANDS VINEYARDS. This winery makes a lot of wine, but
continually offers remarkable quality at its price point. From the
FOUR CORNERS of the COLUMBIA VALLEY comes their 2005 CABERNET
SAUVIGNON. A blend of 80% CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 16% MERLOT, 3% MALBEC
and 1% PETIT VERDOT, with the grapes coming from vineyards on Saddle
Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, Yakima Valley and Rattlesnake Hills,
this wine is very complex considering its moderate cost - $9.75
2. RIVERAERIE is the “second label” of BUNNELL FAMILY CELLAR and is
the name of their herb farm outside of Prosser. We offer the 2005
MALBEC COLUMBIA VALLEY which shows lots of blackberry fruit on the
nose and palate. It is medium-to-full bodied and finishes with some
mineral and herbal influences wrapped-up in sweet vanillans from the
oak - $18.50
3. SAVIAH CELLARS is one of my favorite WALLA WALLA producers of
Bordeaux blends, but their flagship blend, UNE VALLÉE, is getting
expensive. In the 2005 vintage they introduced THE JACK, which is a
similar blend with some SYRAH added. It was an immediate hit,
getting a 90+ rating in the Wine Spectator. The 2006 is more MERLOT-
heavy and is a blend of 88% MERLOT, 6% CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 4%
CABERNET FRANC and 2% SYRAH. The wine offers lots of upfront juicy
fruit – black cherries and plum – with spices and a touch of oak -
$16.00
4. We now offer a 2006 100% SYRAH from WALLA WALLA. ADAMANT CELLARS
is a newcomer and is the winery of DEVIN STINGER, son of Cornell Wine
“regulars” Barbara and Ken. This is an impressive wine for a first
red release. The nose offers black plum, meat and earth aromas, and
this is followed by a softish structure making the wine approachable
now. The finish is long with a nice touch of spice - $29.75

This week we once again offer two PREMIUM POURS:
Our first PREMIUM is the just released 2005 CABERNET SAUVIGNON from
WALLA WALLA’S ABEJA. I have not tasted this wine, but as in this
vintage they are doing their first Reserve since 2002, I assume it is
a great vintage. The local distributor tasted it for the first time
at a lunch last Tuesday and said it was “the best yet” - $43.00 (six
bottles for $215 = $35.83/bottle)
TRY THIS WINE FOR $5.00/Taste or $9.00/4 ounces
For our next PREMIUM we offer another SYRAH. The 2005 LAGNIAPPE is a
COLUMBIA VALLEY bottling from WALLA WALLA’S GRAMERCY CELLARS. Like
ADAMANT CELLARS’ wine, it is the winery’s first commercial red, and,
again, it is a lovely first offering. However the style is somewhat
different showing a more Northern Rhône profile – smoke, bacon fat
and meat on the nose. It is very elegant on the palate with firm
fruit and modest oak with balancing acidity - $33.75
TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.00/Taste or $7.00/4 ounces
TRY BOTH FOR $8.00
NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.
SATURDAY, March 15th
Noon – 5:00PM
Free
We expect to have these two wines open:
ALAIN BRUMONT 2006 GROS MANSENG VDP CÔTES de GASCOGNE – it’s back
with a new label (not an improvement), and this is a great white to
drink and think of spring - $9.75
E. GUIGAL 2005 CÔTES de RHÔNE ROUGE – Guigal would never put his name
on mediocre wine, and this wine lives up to his name. This GRENACHE-
based wine is probably the best GUIGAL CDR for a few years.
Sensational value - $16.00
Cheers,
Pauline & Mick
