PINOT NOIR
CHEESE PLATE
We offer a selection of pinot noir-friendly cheeses, recommended by
my favorite cheese website:
Appenzeller Cow’s
Milk Switzerland
This Alpine raw milk cheese is aged a minimum of six months.
Morbier Les Trois Comtois Cow’s
Milk France
This raw milk cheese is made in two wheels that are then joined with
a layer of edible vegetable ash.
Kirkam’s Lancashire Cow’s
Milk England
It is hard for a Yorkshireman to call something from Lancashire
great, but this is lovely, and expensive, cheese. Another raw milk
cheese, it is made by Ruth Kirkam on Beesley Farm in the village of
Goosnargh, near Preston in Lancashire.
CHEESE PLATE $5.00
This week highlights some of Oregon’s smaller wineries, especially
those who exercise pricing restraint – and throws in a Pinot Noir
from elsewhere in the world. As a change, we are letting the wines
speak and not quoting my detailed tasting notes.
PINOT NOIR SALE!
Especially to encourage you to try the lesser-known Oregon wineries,
on Friday we are offering 15% DISCOUNT ON FOUR OR MORE MIXED BOTTLES
of any Pinot Noir. The same discount applies to any Pinot Noir in
the shop wherever in the world it comes from, including Burgundy, New
Zealand and Australia (there are two exclusions from this discount:
our few remaining bottles of Thomas 2005 Pinot Noir and Alex Gambal
2002 Echezeaux Grand Cru). See a list below of Oregon wines in stock.
1. We start in ITALY – I can hear you say, “Italy for Pinot Noir?” I
tasted it “blind” and would never have guessed Italy. The TERRE di
GIOIA (Land of Joy) 2005 PINOT NERO comes from FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA
in Italy’s northeast and carries an Indicazione Geografica Tipica
delle VENEZIE designation. With Oregon Pinot Noir prices rising by
the week, it is interesting to try what the rest of the world is
offering - $12.00
2. We now come to OREGON and the 2006 JOVINO PINOT NOIR. This is
another label from the JOE DOBBES/WINES BY JOE empire. Created
especially for restaurants (not to be sold in supermarkets), the wine
is a blend of grapes from several American Viticultural Areas - $20.00
3. STONE WOLF VINEYARDS with a vineyard in the EOLA HILLS have been
around since the early 1990s, but I’ve never carried any of their
wines. This week we offer their 2006 BARREL SELECT CUVÉE PINOT NOIR
- $18.50
4. The final wine of our basic flight is WAHLE 2006 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
PINOT NOIR. Many of you know Mark Wahle as he is a regular attendee
at our Friday tastings. All his wines have been good, but they are
getting better and better. This wine is a blend of fruit from the
Eola Hills and Yamhill/Carlton AVAs - $26.00
TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00
This week we offer two Oregon PREMIUM POURS:
JAY SOMERS at J. CHRISTOPHER WINES is an excellent wine maker, having
made great wines from several varietals, both white and red. His J.
CHRISTOPHER 2005 CHARLIE’S VINEYARD PINOT NOIR is his “top-of-the-
line” red. CHARLIE’S VINEYARD is in the DUNDEE HILLS AVA, adjacent
to the famous ABBEY RIDGE VINEYARD - $36.00
TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.00/Taste or $7.50/4 ounces
RIBBON RIDGE VINEYARD is a producer whom a major magazine called “a
winery to watch”. The 2005 ESTATE PINOT NOIR is their third
vintage. The vineyard is located in the RIBBON RIDGE AVA near such
producers as Patricia Green, Brickhouse and Beaux Freres. The wines
are made at the Carlton Winemakers’ Studio - $30.75
TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.50/Taste or $6.50/4 ounces
TASTE BOTH FOR $7.00
NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.
