THIS WEEK
FRIDAY, April 25th

PORTUGAL PÂTÉ PLATE
To go with the hearty reds from Portugal, we once more revert to
pâtés from City Market NW. These are two new ones for me:
Rabbit and Pancetta
Wild Boar Rillettes with Prune, Orange and Walnut Oil
PÂTÉ SAMPLER PLATE $4.00
Portugal, long known for Port and very rustic table wines, is now
producing some of the best value wines in Europe. This week we will
offer five bargain wines in the basic flight, and will not offer a
Premium Pour. If the weather had been better, we would have offered
a VINHO VERDE, Portugal’s famous white wine. However we do have in
stock the QUINTA da AVELEDA 2006 VINHO VERDE at $9.50 A blend of
TRAJADURA, LOUREIRO and ALVARINHO, it is still lively and fresh,
although the 2007 will arrive soon, The wine offers delicate aromas
of fresh flowers, tropical fruit on the palate with just a touch of
pétillance, and a long, dry finish. A wonderful warmer weather
sipper, and an accompaniment to light fish dishes.
1. We start in DOURO, the home of Port. KOLHEITA de IDEIAS is a new
producer to me, and their 2005 ESBOÇO is a great bargain. A blend of
several local grapes (usually used in Port) it offers lots of
blackberry fruit with a touch of spice - $12.50
2. Moving to the DÃO region and a wine from one of our favorite
producers, QUINTA dos ROQUES. Their “second label”, QUINTA do
CORREIO is named after an ancient posting station alongside the
vineyard. A blend of JAEN, TOURIGA NACIONAL, ALFROCHEIRO and TINTO
RORIZ, the 2003 was a big hit at our last PORTUGUESE tasting, and
this 2005 is even better - $12.50
3. We now go back to the DOURO and producer ALVES de SOUSA. Their
QUINTA do VALE da RAPOSA 2004 TINTO is mainly from the TINTO CÃO
grape. It offers lots of spicy black fruit, together with subtle
mineral elements - $15.50
4. ALENTEJO is a region to the east near the border with Spain, and
slightly south of Lisbon. This was the “hot” area in the late 1990s
with investments from people such as Château Lafite. TOURIGA
NACIONAL is a serious Port grape but also makes stunning table
wines. From ALENTEJO we offer HERDADO do ESPORÃO and their 2003
TOURIGA NACIONAL. This has gobs of deep black fruit with well-
integrated oak and lots of spice on the finish. Spectacular value! -
$17.50
5. From ESTREMADURA we offer the QUINTA de CHOCAPALHA 2005 TINTO.
The blend is 45% CASTELÃO, 35% TINTA RORIZ (TEMPRANILLO), 15% TOURIGA
NACIONAL, and 5% ALICANTE BOUSCHET. This is a big wine showing black
fruit and a Merlot-like chocolate palate and finish, with some oak
from the French barriques. It was a Matt Kramer “rave” in The Sunday
Oregonian a few weeks ago - $19.00

As always we will have a couple of wines open. This week’s
provisional choices:
New products on the Portland market are the wines from HARAS de
PIRQUE who produce wines in CHILE’s MAIPO VALLEY. The 2006
CHARDONNAY is fantastic value. Out of California or France you’d pay
twice the price for this quality. The wine offers lots of apple and
pear fruit, subtle oak and good acidity, giving the wine wonderful
balance - $11.50
MOSBY VINTNERS of SANTA BARBERA mainly specialize in Italian
varietals. Who knew anyone in the USA was growing TEROLDEGO and
LAGREIN! They also grow more “main stream” varietals and their LUCCA
VINO ROSSO di SANTA BARBERA is a blend of mainly SANGIOVESE with a
small amount of DOLCETTO. LUCCA is named after a picturesque village
in Tuscany. It is crafted in the style of the finest Chianti
Classicos, and is rich, flavorful and lightly oaked - $11.25
