AUSTRALIA has been one of the great wine “blenders”, mixing grapes
that nobody else would have considered. How about Cabernet Sauvignon
and Mourvèdre? OK, we will not go that wild, but all of this week’s
wines are blends except one – a typical Aussie Shiraz. It is very
difficult to choose a tasting order, so I’ve decided to go with price!

1. We carried some WATER WHEEL wines some time ago, and recently a
customer said the 2006 MEMSIE was wonderful – I agree! A blend of
87% SHIRAZ, 7% CABERNET SAUVIGNOIN and 6% MALBEC, this wine from
BENDIGO in VICTORIA offers a complex nose of black currant, blueberry
and cinnamon. The palate has a plush texture with lots of ripe
fruit, and the balanced finish gives some elegance to the wine. It
was rated “outstanding” by The Wine Advocate - $13.50

2. WOLF BLASS, founded in the early 1970s, produces a wide range of
wines from “supermarket specials” to some elegant, high-end wines.
This month, the local distributor is doing a promotion of the
winery’s middle range GOLD LABEL series. We offer the 2004 BAROSSA
VALLEY SHIRAZ. This is a classic from the area with lots of ripe
berry fruit, a touch of spice, and noticeable wood. Made to sell for
about $25, this is now fabulous value - $15.00

3. After customers Kim and Robert came back from a vacation Down-
Under, they raved about this next wine (in an earlier vintage) and it
was successful in the shop. LANGMEIL is another BAROSSA VALLEY
producer, and they call their SHIRAZ (44%), GRENACHE (35%) and
MOURVÈDRE (21%) blend THREE GARDENS. The 2006 is another wine with
an “outstanding” rating in The Wine Advocate. The wine was aged in a
mix of American and French oak, its nose is complex offering black
cherry, tobacco and cedar, and the palate is medium bodied showing
blueberry fruit and some spice - $18.00

4. BEN GLAETZER used to be a WOLF BLASS winemaker before setting up
his own winery and consulting with several others. All the fruit he
uses for his own wines come from the EBENEZER district in the
northern BAROSSA VALLEY. His 2005 WALLACE is a blend of 80% SHIRAZ
from 65-year-old vines and 20% GRENACHE from 90-year-old vines. Aged
in a mix of American and French oak, this wine is stunning value.
The nose is very complex, offering black cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco
and a lovely touch of damp earth. The concentrated palate moves more
to blueberry fruit, and the wine exhibits a good structure, a long
finish, and well-integrated tannins. Another wine rated
“outstanding” in The Wine Advocate and also designated excellent
value at $25.00 - $22.50

This week’s PREMIUM POUR:

For our PREMIUM POUR we move to the PYRENEES district of VICTORIA
(somewhat distant from Spain/France!). DOMINIQUE PORTET, brother of
CLOS du VAL’s BERNARD PORTET, founded TALTARNI in 1972. Their father
was cellar master at CHÂTEAU LAFITE, so they have a significant wine
heritage. TALTARNI makes some lovely bubbly and I’ve always liked
the Cabernet Sauvignon – it is more Latour in style than Lafite. The
2001 CEPHAS is their flagship wine and is a blend of 72% SHIRAZ and
28% CABERNET SAUVIGNON. Aged in French oak, the wine is super-smooth
and elegant while exhibiting lots of black fruit. There are vanillan
overtones on the nose and palate, and lovely spice on the long
finish. Current stock is all that is available of this vintage - $39.75

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces
