2005 was a great vintage in Bordeaux – many say it is the greatest
since the sensational 1961. I must admit, I’ve yet to taste a poor
2005. Of course, many are better values than others. Classified
Growths are at stratospheric prices – I used to be able to afford
Second Growths, but now there is just too much money amongst wine
purchasers! This tasting is designed to show that in great vintages
there are lovely wines at modest prices. Considering the anemic
dollar, all these wines are wonderful value. All are from the 2005
Vintage.

1. CHÂTEAU SAINT-FLORIN – this estate carries a BORDEAUX Appellation
and is in the ENTRE-DEUX-MERS region of Bordeaux, more known for its
white wines. The estate is planted to 60% MERLOT, 20% CABERNET
SAUVIGNON and 20% CABERNET FRANC. However the label on the 2005 just
says MERLOT and CABERNET SAUVIGNON. Who knows or cares! This is a
lovely little Bordeaux at a mouth-watering price - $10.75

2. CHÂTEAU de la GRAVE – I’ve been a fan of this CÔTES de BOURG
estate since I took-over the shop. We offer their CARACTÈRE bottling
which is one step up from the basic estate bottling. Typical of this
Appellation, this wine is mainly MERLOT and CABERNET FRANC. This
vintage, the Château has gone back to the traditional Bordeaux bottle
of the 1930s – great packaging! - $16.50

3. CHÂTEAU PLAISANCE – when I bought the shop from Morgan there was
some 2000 from this Château in the inventory, but I’d never tasted
this wine until the 2005 vintage. The wine carries a BORDEAUX
SUPERIEUR Appellation and the estate is in MACAU which is a village
in the MARGAUX Appellation. The wine is mainly CABERNET SAUVIGNON
together with small amounts of PETIT VERDOT and CABERNET FRANC.
While this week I’m letting the wines speak for themselves, I have to
say this is classic MÉDOC – gobs of cassis fruit together with lead
pencil and cedar box. Lovely now, but give it a couple of years and
it will be unbelievable for the price - $19.75

4. CHÂTEAU SAINT-PAUL – this estate carries a HAUT MÉDOC Appellation
and is classified a CRU BOURGEOIS. The vineyards are planted to 60%
CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 35% MERLOT and 5% CABERNET FRANC. While this
wine would benefit from a little cellar aging, it is wonderful now
with beef or game - $20.00

This week’s PREMIUM POUR:

CHÂTEAU BERNADOTTE is a new estate to me. It is owned by Second
Growth CHÂTEAU PICHON-LONGUEVILLE, COMTESSE de LALANDE. It carries a
HAUT MÉDOC Appellation, and the property is located in the commune of
SAINT SAUVEUR on the borders of PAUILLAC. This vintage is a blend of
49% CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 48% MERLOT, and 3% CABERNET FRANC. Typical
of its parent estate, the wine offers lots of plush fruit together
with structure for aging over many years - $39.75

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.

SATURDAY, April 5th
Noon – 5:00PM

As usual we will have a couple of wines open for free tasting – I’ve
yet to decide which!

Cheers,
