Zinfandel
CHEESE PLATES
These suggested matches for Zinfandel come from the Artisanal Premium
Cheese Company of New York, and these notes are from their web site.
The cheeses were purchased from Whole Foods.
Piave is a cow’s milk cheese named after the River Piave, whose
source is found at Mount Peralba in Val Visdende, in the northernmost
part of the province of Veneto, Italy. The land surrounding the
ancient river is integral to the character of the cheese: it is where
the milk is collected, the curd cooked, and the cheese aged until
hard. Piave has an intense, full-bodied flavor, reminiscent of
Parmigiano Reggiano, that intensifies with age and makes this cheese
unique.
Ossau Iraty is a classic sheep's milk cheese made in the French
Pyrenées in two neighboring provinces: the Ossau Valley in the Bearn
and the wooded hills of Iraty in the French Basque country. Ossau
Iraty is made with the milk of the Manech and Basco-Bearnaise ewes.
While it complies with strict Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC)
regulations, the shape of each wheel can vary from region to region.
Ossau is aged for a minimum of ninety days. Its fragrance is
reminiscent of toasted hazelnuts, and its taste encapsulates the
sweet, buttery flavors that a great sheep’s milk cheese can deliver.
Zamorano is a hard sheep’s milk cheese, noticeably nuttier and richer
than its Spanish cousin, Manchego. The nomadic shepherding families
of Castille-Léon have been hand-crafting Zamorano for centuries.
Zamorano has a sharp, moderately gamey, sheep’s milk flavored bite
and texture that melts in the mouth.
CHEESE SAMPLER PLATE $5.00
Many of you are aware that Zinfandel is not my favorite grape, but
Pauline’s enjoyment of the grape makes sure there is some consumption
in our house. Because my judgment may be “out of the mainstream”,
these wines were chosen because they have received good press, and
represent different California regions. The tasting notes below are
from magazines.
1. CENTRAL VALLEY producer McMANNIS produces a range of value-priced
wines of surprising quality. We have carried several, but never the
ZINFANDEL. The 2005 ZINFANDEL carries a CALIFORNIA appellation
although most of the fruit is from LODI. “Blackberry and raspberry
that is silky and fluid, with just a hint of fennel spiciness.
Utterly pleasant – in the best sense – this is your picnic red…I also
like the undertones of chocolate, mocha and oak.” (Quarterly Review
of Wines) - $12.50
2. Unfortunately, the next wine I’d planned which was from EDMEADES
is now out of stock at the distributor. I like the following wine
but will quote from a wine blog: “VOLÉ 2004 SONOMA COUNTY ZINFANDEL
is a Zinfandel drinker's dream. Complex spice blends with the
characteristic Sonoma County Zinfandel ripe-berry fruit flavor and
richness. This is the wine that inspired the VOLÉ brand – a soaring
wine that will make you think that you can do that ethereal leap...or
at least inspire you to renew your subscription to your local dance
or other performing arts organization.” (You will understand this
when you see the label) - $18.75
3. The next wine is one of my favorite ZINFANDELS and we have carried
it in most vintages. The 2005 PEACHY CANYON PASO ROBLES WEST SIDE is
described by the Wine Spectator as follows: “An appealingly rustic
Zinfandel, with smoky cherry and licorice aromas and zesty plum and
black pepper flavors. Drink now.” - $19.50
4. Our final wine in the basic flight is the DASCHE 2005 DRY CREEK
VALLEY: “There’s a burst of fruit up front – black cherry, blueberry
and licorice – then it firms up, offering tart blackberry, black
pepper and smoke flavors that finish with rustic tannins. Best from
2008.” (Wine Spectator) - $24.00

For our PREMIUM POUR we move to the ALEXANDER VALLEY:
ROSENBLUM CELLARS have long been known as excellent ZINFANDEL
producers with a range of wines from value-priced to expensive single-
vineyard wines. Recently, some of the latter have become available
again in Oregon. The ROCKPILE ROAD vineyard (in stock) has a cult-
like following after the 2003 was the highest placed Zinfandel ever
in the WS’s Top 100 wines. However we will taste the 2005 HARRIS
KRATKA VINEYARD. Whereas the ROCKPILE is 100% ZINFANDEL, the HARRIS
KRATKA is a blend of ZINFANDEL, CARIGNAN and PETITE SIRAH. For
lovers of RIDGE’S GEYSERVILLE or LYTTON SPRINGS wines, this is the
wine for you! What I like about such blends is that the spiciness
from the CARIGNAN seems to cut the excessive jaminess displayed by
many pure ZINFANDELS, creating a much more layered and complex wine -
