Wines of South America
Many of you will have met Robin Malinosky-Rummell at her, and husband
Francis’s, regular appearance at our Friday Tastings. As at our last
South American tasting, she will be at Cornell Wine Company on Friday
to promote her book Bring Your Own Children - South America. Her
book is based on experiences from their “family sabbatical” in South
America, and as one early reader said “Truly an eye-opener for anyone
who believes the traveling life ends once you are married with
children”. Robin and Francis have founded Rumsky Travelworks to help
families expand their horizons by making travel abroad accessible and
fun for all ages.

PÂTÉ PLATES
This week we once more move from cheese to pâté and offer:
Venison with Sun-dried Cherries and Hazelnuts
Rabbit and Pork with Pistachios
PÂTÉ SAMPLER PLATE $5.00

In Oregon for South American wines we are almost restricted to wines
from Argentina and Chile (no problem with that) — there are some
interesting wines from Uruguay and Brasil, but these are not
currently available in Oregon.

1. We start in ARGENTINA with the white grape TORRENTÉS. This grape
also comes from Spain, but many people say there is little
correlation between the two. The Argentinian version is very
aromatic, somewhat like Muscat, but has a lovely, minerally, dry
finish. We will taste the ALAMOS 2006 from MENDOZA - $10.00

2. Next we move across to CHILE to taste its signature grape,
CARMINÈRE. Many wines from this grape have too much of a green bell
pepper aromas and tastes, but this SANTA RITA 120 2005 from the RAPEL
VALLEY is an amazing wine for the price. It shows the classic
attributes of the grape in a nice, modern package. Incredible value
- $7.50

3. We go back to ARGENTINA and its signature grape, MALBEC. There
are wonderful versions of this grape from about $10 to north of $50.
The TRIVENTO 2005 MALBEC SELECT is from MENDOZA and is a wonderful
combination of this dark grape with modern wine making, showing ripe
fruit and some oak. Not a complex wine, but incredible value. This
is produced by the Argentinian operation of Chile’s Concha y Toro -
$10.00

4. What is interesting in ARGENTINA is the number of other nationals
who are coming to make wine. PARIS GOULART is a joint venture
between MENDOZA’S MAURICIO PARODY and a BRASILIAN entrepreneur.
MARSHALL PARIS GOULART was a 1932 revolutionary in BRASIL and his
grand daughter found title to some old vineyards in MENDOZA. The
2005 PARIS is a blend of 60% MALBEC and 40% CABRNET SAUVIGNON grown
at about 1000 metres from 90+ year-old vines. This is one of the
best blends I’ve tasted from ARGENTINA. It offers soft, lush fruit
coupled with a great structure. The wine is much better after about
2 hours of air time - $14.50

5. CATENA is looked upon as one of the greatest of the “new wave” of
ARGENTINA producers. While all its wines are wonderful, some can be
somewhat pricey. The entry-level wines, while not inexpensive, are
still wonderful value. The 2005 MALBEC from MENDOZA offers gobs of
juicy fruit coupled with toast from the oak, and was rated
“outstanding” in several magazines. A really classy wine - $22.50

For our PREMIUM POUR we move back to CHILE

CASA LAPOSTELLE which is a joint venture between Chilean interests
and the owners of France’s GRAND MARNIER. The wines they make in
CHILE are more towards Europe in style than California, but to me are
a lovely balance between Old-World and New-World styles. The 2004
CUVÉE ALEXANDRE SYRAH from LAS KURAS vineyard in the CACHAPOAL VALLEY
is wonderful. The nose is almost Northern Rhône with touches of
bacon fat and black fruits, but the palate shows a more New World
fruit-forward style. Can this be the best balance between New and
Old Worlds? - $27.00 (current stock only, further stock will be
$33.00, the price increase resulting from the wine’s success in Europe).

TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.00/Taste or $5.50/4 ounces

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6th

As usual we will have a couple of interesting wines open – I’ve yet
to choose which!
