Wines for Your Thanksgiving Feast

THIS WEEK’S SAMPLER PLATE
To go with our wines for Thanksgiving we will be offering a free
turkey brest (while supplies last).

After Pauline and I came to the USA in 1976 we were “adopted” by my
boss’ family for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Jack, my boss, always
served a dry Rosé (in 1977???) and a Beaujolais and so I associate
these wines with Thanksgiving.

1. Over recent years, the most successful “Thanksgiving Wines” in the
shop have been ones made from PINOT BLANC. This year we go to ALSACE
to sample such a wine. TRIMBACH is a very traditional producer and
does not agree with the richer, off-dry style of many of today’s
Alsace wines. Their 2004 PINOT BLANC is a classic, offering good
fruit together with that minerally component that makes many Alsace
wines special. This is a wonderful value wine - $13.50

2. For our rosé we move to PROVENCE, the home of some stunning rosés.
This rosé is a Club Wine this month, but it is such a bargain we
wanted you all to try it. The SABLES d’AZURE 2006 CÔTES de PROVENCE
ROSÉ is a classic from Provence and even comes in the traditional
shaped bottle, a rarity these days. As this wine came into town a
little late in the season, the importer has reduced the price. The
wine offers lots of bright raspberry and strawberry fruit which is
coupled with that herbal and mineral elements only a Provencal rosé
can offer. It will be wonderful to drink before your Thanksgiving
feast or to accompany the turkey - $9.75

3. For our BEAUJOLAIS this year we offer the GEORGES DUBOEUF 2006
“FLOWER LABEL BOTTLING” from the SAINT AMOUR CRU. Most people when
(if ever?) they think of BEAUJOLAIS, just think of NOUVEAU. While
NOUVEAU is fun, there are many serious wines in the BEAUJOLAIS
region. SAINT AMOUR is one of ten CRUS (we have several other Crus
in stock) and it offers lots of ripe GAMAY fruit together with more
complexity than offered by simple BEAUJOLAIS - $13.25
(Note: we are offering special discounts on Cru Beaujolais this
Friday and Saturday – see under Saturday).

4. We normally serve a ZINFANDEL because an American wine should go
with an American holiday. This week we will go along with one of
MATT KRAMER’S “Thanksgiving picks”, the SANDHILL WINERY "RED
MOUNTAIN" CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2003. I have not tasted this wine and
so just quote Matt: “Just a few weeks ago I recommended the 2002
vintage of this impressively original and characterful cabernet
sauvignon from Sandhill Winery in Washington's tiny (710 acres) Red
Mountain district. The response was quick: The distributor reported
that the wine sold out in eight hours, with more than 200 cases
flying out the door to 85 retail and restaurant accounts. Happily,
the 2003 vintage has just been released. It, too, is a stunner:
dense, rich, intense and suffused with the one-of-a-kind savor of Red
Mountain-grown cabernet. That means a kind of ironlike taste and
scent allied to a medicinal note, which tastes a whole lot better
than that descriptor suggests. This is flat-out-superb cabernet
sauvignon with a character rarely found in cabernets from just about
anywhere -- including the Napa Valley. How does it compare to the
2002? The 2003 vintage is even better, with a greater depth and
resonance of flavor. More than drinkable now, it surely will improve
with additional cellaring.”
This vintage sold-out even faster in two and one-half hours. However
this wine merchant was on the telephone on Sunday, so we have a few
cases. If we have any left, we will pour it on Friday - $20.00

5. We need a sparkling red at Thanksgiving and this year we go back
to FRANCE. DOMAINE RENARDAT-FÂCHE is a producer in BUGEY CERDON
which is mid way between Lyon and Geneva. The wine is a blend of
GAMAY NOIR and POULSARD and is made by the méthode ancestral. This
results in a low-alcohol, berry scented, slightly sweet, sparkling
and gorgeously refreshing wine - $19.75

For this week’s PREMIUM POUR we offer a great Oregon Pinot Noir:

Until now, we have never carried a wine from J. K. CARRIERE. To be
honest, I thought the wines were over-priced and depended on a “cult
following”. Last week I went to a trade tasting of many Oregon “cult
wines”. While I agree the J. K. CARRIERE 2005 WILLAMETTE VALLEY
PINOT NOIR seems expensive for a “basic” wine, it stood out against
many more expensive wines. Jim Prosser, the owner-winemaker, maybe
goes overboard on the back label, but when he said “Pinot Noir is a
tuning fork for the soul”, I can’t help but agree after tasting this
wine. This is not for the “Syrah wannabe” crowd, this is what Oregon
Pinot Noir should be about, and maybe I’ll become a cult member - $39.50

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.

We will have a BEAUJOLAIS day! I had ignored NOUVEAU this year
because of the price (air freight adds about $3.00/bottle), but I had
a couple of inquiries. If the wine arrives, we will have it open
together with one CRU BEAUJOLAIS. We will also offer special
discounts for people willing to buy at least three bottles of the
many Crus we have in stock (Chenas, Saint Amour [2 producers],
Julienas, Chiroubles, Morgon [3 producers]. Fleurie). BUY ANY THREE
OR MORE BOTTLES OF BEAUJOLAIS AND RECEIVE A 15% DISCOUNT (no other
discounts apply).

Cheers,

Pauline & Mick
