EARL and COUNTESS LEVEL
CAPE MENTELLE 2005 CHARDONNAY, MARGARET RIVER, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
One normally associates Australian Chardonnay with lush tropical
fruit and a reasonable amount of oak. Western Australia is a very
old wine region that has only come back to the fore in the last 15-20
years. CAPE MENTELLE was founded in 1969 and was first known for its
red wines. Now its whites are getting great reviews. This
CHARDONNAY offers green apple and pear fruit wrapped-up in subtle
oak. It is medium-bodied on the palate and then has a long, balanced
finish with good acidity. A great “sipper”, it is also a wonderful
accompaniment to many seafood and fowl dishes.

DOMAINE de la RECTORIE 2003 COLLIOURE “LE SÉRIS”, ROUSSILLON, FRANCE
Dr. Parcé of this Domaine is better known for his fabulous BANYULS,
but his red wines are also wonderful. 2003 was not a classic vintage
in ROUSSILLON as excessive heat produced riper, more fruit-forward
wines than traditional. However some producers produced classic
wines such as this COLLIOURE. It is a blend of GRENACHE and CARIGNAN
that was aged in large oak foudres. The wine offers black raspberry
from the Grenache and spice from the Carignan, but the underlying
herbs and earth give this wine a sense of terroir you rarely find in
USA wine. Made to sell for $32.00, this is fabulous value.

BARON and BARONESS LEVEL
SABLES d’AZURE 2006 CÔTES de PROVENCE ROSÉ, FRANCE
OK, we are cheating this month and you are not getting a white wine!
When Pauline and I came to the USA in 1976, my boss “adopted” us for
Thanksgiving. In those years past, he served a dry rosé with the
turkey. As a result, I associate rosé with Thanksgiving. This rosé
is a classic from Provence and even comes in the traditional shaped
bottle, a rarity these days. As this wine came into town a little
late in the season, the importer has reduced the price. The wine
offers lots of bright raspberry and strawberry fruit which is coupled
with that minerality only a Provencal rosé can offer. It will be
wonderful to drink before your Thanksgiving feast or to accompany the
turkey.

OKANOGAN ESTATE 2003 MERLOT, WASHINGTON, USA.
The producer is called GOLD DIGGER CELLARS and it is based in
OROVILLE which is on Route 97 just south of the Canadian border.
North of the border it is OKANAGAN, but on this side it is OKANOGAN.
When Pauline and I drove up Route 97 this last July, we stopped at
the winery. The wines were of varied quality, but the two that stood
out were a dry rosé from Pinot Noir and this MERLOT. This is no
simple fruit bomb. It offers gobs of black plum and black cherry
fruit coupled with subtle oak (18 months in French barrels). What I
like are the touches of tobacco and spice that give the wine a
complexity far beyond its price.
Regular Price: $14.00
Member Price: $11.90
Total Member Monthly Cost: $20.19
