Wines of Australia

CHEESE PLATES
To go with these Aussie wines we offer a selection of Cheddar
cheese. Unfortunately New Seasons no longer carries the Aussie
cheese we wanted, but they recommended these others.
English Farmhouse Cheddar
Cahill’s Whiskey Cheddar - Ireland
Canadian Extra Sharp Cheddar
CHEESE SAMPLER PLATE $4.00

This week we will show the Aussies have more to offer than Shiraz –
but we will include two Shiraz in our tasting.

1. We will start with a white wine from WESTERN AUSTRALIA. While
grapes were first grown in this area in the 19th Century, the wine
industry, except for a few growers, disappeared until the 1980s. The
MARGARET RIVER region has become well known, especially for its white
wines, and CAPE MENTELLE is one of the area’s stars. In 2006 they
made a good knock-off of a WHITE BORDEAUX. Made from 60% SAUVIGNON
BLANC and 40% SEMILLON, the wine certainly smells of the Sauvignon,
but the Semillon gives a lovely, round, smooth texture to the mid-
palate and finish. For those of you that find Kiwi Sauvignon Blancs
too aggressive, this is the wine for you - $16.00

2. We stay in WESTERN AUSTRALIA for our first red. SALITAGE is a new
producer for me, and they are based in the PEMBERTON region. Their
2001 “Bordeaux blend” could be taken as French – blind I would not
have guessed it was from “down-under”. A blend of 53% CABERNET
SAUVIGNON, 28% MERLOT, 14% CABERNET FRANC and 5% PETIT VERDOT, this
is a subtle and complex wine. Up front the cassis of Cabernet
Sauvignon is dominant, and then plum fruit from Merlot comes through,
and then the other grapes kick-in to give an earthy, spicy, quality
to the finish. To a Brit, this is fantastic value - $19.50

3. It seems that I should have called this tasting a WESTERN
AUSTRALIA TASTING as the next wine is from that region! One
associates MALBEC with ARGENTINA, so why shouldn’t another Southern
Hemisphere country do well with the grape? This winery’s was the
first 100% MALBEC I’ve tasted from AUSTRALIA, and while the 2004 was
good, this 2005 is spectacular. The FERNGROVE 2005 KING MALBEC is
from the FRANKLAND RIVER region. Typically very dark in color, the
nose offers blackberry and what a Brit would call “Christmas Cake”
aromas. The palate is full-bodied with lots of black plum and cherry
all wrapped-up in French oak - $25.00

4. Finally we get to a SHIRAZ and the BAROSSA VALLEY. THORN-CLARKE,
a family estate, makes a large range of wines and the 2006 SHOTFIRE
SHIRAZ is in the middle of their range. For a wine from this region,
the nose is somewhat subdued, but then the wine roars with lots of
black plum fruit and vanillans from the copious oak. The balance and
length are impeccable - $22.50

For our PREMIUM POUR we stay in the BAROSSA VALLEY:

BAROSSA VALLEY ESTATE is a cooperative that produces many value-
oriented wines. The EBENEZER SHIRAZ is their top wine. Many Shiraz
from the BAROSSA VALLEY can be a little “over the top” showing too
much eucalyptus (menthol?) and too much alcohol. This 2001 wine,
while obviously Australian, is more subtle than many such wines. It
does show eucalyptus and ripe black plum fruit on the nose, but the
palate has some elegance, and the long finish has the acidity making
the wine a great partner to food - $30.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.50/Taste or $6.00/4 ounces

We will also be offering another wine by the taste or glass, but the
wine is not available for sale. The distributor is sold-out, but
wants people to taste an excellent SHIRAZ with a few years of age on
the wine. The BEST 2000 BIN 0 SHIRAZ was wonderful three years ago,
and I’m looking forward to tasting it again. I will not know the
price until it arrives on Friday – likely about $45.

TRY THIS WINE FOR $5.00/Taste or $9.00/4 ounces
(prices subject to change)

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.

SATURDAY, November 3rd
Noon – 5:00PM
Free

As usual, we will have a couple of interesting wines open. I’ve yet
to decide which!
