We look to the USA west coast for nearly all our wines this week.
However we have included one furrin wine to keep things more
interesting.
1. We start in CALIFORNIA with well-known SONOMA producer CHÂTEAU ST.
JEAN. Several of their wines are on the pricey side, and their
“California Series” not consistent enough for the prices asked.
However their 2004 CALIFORNIA CABERNET SAUVIGNON hit the mark with
me, and at its currently reduced price, is well worth the money. It
offers a lovely nose and palate of ripe cassis coupled with well
integrated oak. While not an enormous wine, there is good intensity,
balance and length - $13.25

2. I usually associate CHILE’S SANTA RITA with their 120 Series of
inexpensive wines, but a couple of weeks ago I tasted some of their
more expensive wines. While the 2004 RESERVA CABERNET was good for
its price, I thought the 2003 MEDELLA REAL MAIPO VALLEY CABERNET
SAUVIGNON was outstanding value. While in some years the winery
blends in some Cabernet Franc, the 2003 is 100% CABERNET SAUVIGNON
from an estate vineyard in ALTO JAHUEL. The nose is lovely combining
black cherry, cassis, vanillans and toast (the wine spent 12 months
in French oak). The wine is full-bodied on the palate with the
flavors reflecting the nose. Ripe tannins provide grip on the long,
complex finish - $17.50
3. We return to CALIFORNIA and PASO ROBLES’ producer, ROBERT HALL.
While the winery mainly concentrates on Rhône varietals, based on
this wine they do an excellent job with CABERNET SAUVIGNON. In the
2005, the 81% CABERNET SAUVIGNON is blended with 9% MERLOT, 6%
CABERNET FRANC and 4%SYRAH. Black fruit aromas (plum and currant)
together with vanillans leap out of the glass. The palate shows
plush black fruit, and the finish shows touches of spice and
chocolate. There are some noticeable, but velvety, tannins on the
long finish - $20.00

4. We now go north to WASHINGTON, and PROSSER to be exact. COYOTE
CANYON VINEYARD’S winery located there, is a new winery for me. I do
not know whether there is any connection between them and
California’s Coyote Canyon Winery. The Washington 2004 BEST RED is
an almost Bordeaux-like blend of 35% CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 35% MERLOT
and 30% CABERNET FRANC. All the fruit comes from the HORSE HEAVEN
HILLS. The nose has touches of cedar in addition to ripe blackberry
fruit. While the wine has the intensity typical of a Washington
wine, it also elegant and well balanced. Only 133 cases were made. -
$18.50

For our PREMIUM POUR we return to CALIFORNIA:

The RISTOW 2003 QUINTA de PEDRAS VINEYARD is classic NAPA VALLEY
CABERNET SAUVIGNON – ripe, intense fruit coupled with some Bordeaux
overtones. The fruit was picked in small lots over a period from
September 26 through November 1. This was to obtain the best from
the differing terroir of each part of the vineyard. Yields varied
between 0.8 – 2.5 tons per acre. The nose shows black cherries,
cassis and pencil shavings. The mouth feel is luscious with flavors
of black plums and cherries together with some spiciness. The long
finish has a touch of bitter chocolate. The balance and acidity make
this a very food-friendly wine - $62.50

TRY THIS WINE FOR $6.50/Taste or $12.00/4 ounces

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.

SATURDAY, June 2nd

Noon – 5 PM

Free tasting

As usual we will have a couple of wines open. The provisional
selection is:

GIANNINA 2005 VERNACCIA di SAN GIMIGNANO – just the sort of
refreshing WHITE you need on a warm day - $10.00

For a RED, we offer a bargain from FRANCE’S CORBIÈRES region. You
can smell and taste the south of France in this wine. The CHATEAU
LAMY 2005 is a blend of 35% incredibly old CARIGNAN, 35% GRENACHE,
15% SYRAH and 15% MOUVÈDRE. The nose and palate has that wonderful
combination of earth, herbs, and black fruit that could come from
nowhere else than the LANGUEDOC/ROUSSILLON. AN ABSOLUTE STUNNING
WINE FOR $8.00!

Looking forward to seeing you all,

Cheers,

Mick & Pauline
