SOUTH AMERICA

This week we are doing something different! WINES, BOOKS and CHEESE.

BOOK SIGNING

Many of you will have met Robin Malinosky-Rummell at her, and husband
Francis’s, regular appearance at our Friday Tastings. She will be at
Cornell Wine Company to sell and sign her just published book Bring
Your Own Children - South America. Her book is based on experiences
from their “family sabbatical” in South America, and as one early
reader said “Truly an eye-opener for anyone who believes the
traveling life ends once you are married with children”. Robin and
Francis have founded Rumsky Travelworks to help families expand their
horizons by making travel abroad accessible and fun for all ages. On
the Friday evening Robin will have a slide show running on a laptop,
and several of the wines being poured will be from wineries mentioned
in her book.

FREE TASTING
We will have three wines from wineries mentioned in the book open for
free sampling. These are all from CHILE as no wines from the
ARGENTINA wineries visited are yet available in Oregon. You may
purchase a 4 ounce glass of any of these wines.

CALINA 2006 CHARDONNAY
$07.25/bottle $1.50/glass

CONCHO y TORO 2005 CASILLERO del DIABLO CARMENÈRE
$09.00/bottle $2.00/glass

COUSIÑO MACUL 2004 ANTIGUAS RESERVAS CABENET SAUVIGNON
$15.50/bottle $3.00/glass

“TRADITIONAL” TASTING
We intended to have three MALBEC wines from ARGENTINA open, but
tasted a great MERLOT from CHILE, so have included that wine.

1. We start in CHILE with the 2004 CASA LAPOSTOLLE CUVÉE ALEXANDRE
MERLOT. This wine is made from 60+ year-old vines in the APALTA
VINEYARD in the COLCHAGUA VALLEY. The wine includes 15% CAMENÈRE and
was aged in FRENCH OAK of which 40% was new. This is an intense yet
complex Merlot, showing lots of red plum and cherries, coupled with
subtle oak influences - $24.00

2. Now to ARGENTINA’S MAIPÚ which is in the MENDOZA region. The
RICARDO SANTOS 2004 MALBEC is 100% MALBEC from the LA MADRAS
VINEYARD. The vineyard is at 2800 feet elevation which is not the
highest in the area, but gets lots of sun and also a mineral rich run-
off from the mountains. The wine is modern in style with noticeable
French oak, but intense black fruit is coupled with earth and spice
giving lovely complexity - $15.00

3. CATENA is one of my favorite ARGENTINA producers, and their “entry
level” MALBEC is always good. I wanted to pour the 2004 but there
has been a vintage change to 2005 which I have yet to taste. The
2004 offered gobs of juicy fruit coupled with toast from the oak, and
was rated “outstanding” in several magazines. The importer says the
2005 is even better - $21.00
(We have a few bottles of the 2004 available at the same price)

CHEESE PLATE
I’m not sure if any South American cheeses are available in Oregon,
so I went with the nearest thing, SPAIN and ENGLAND. I can hear you
saying “ENGLAND???” The only connection is we Brits built the
original railways in Argentina. Of course I could mention the
Malvinas, but I will not….
Mahon Cow’s
Milk Spain
We’ve used this before – from the island of Menorca, it almost tastes
like sheep’s milk cheese.
Ibérico Cow/Goat/
Sheep Central Plains
Over 50% of Spanish cheese production is from a blend of milks, and
this cheese’s name comes from a style of cheese produced all over the
Iberian peninsular. This one comes from the Central Plains and shows
mild acid from cow’s milk, the deeper flavor of sheep’s milk, and the
finishing tang of goat’s milk.
Coastal Cheddar Cow’s
Milk England
This cheese has been very popular in the past. I’m not sure where
the name comes from – most of England is near a coast….

CHEESE SAMPLER PLATE $3.00

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.

SATURDAY, May 19th
Noon – 5 PM
Free tasting
We will have a couple of wines open for free tasting; the final
choice will depend on weather forecast (we hope to pour a Rosé,
probably the PROVENZA 2006 CHIARETTO, our most popular Rosé over the
last two years), but one wine will be:

VILLA PIGNA 2005 ROSSO PICENO is a blend of MONTEPULCIANO and
SANGIOVESE from LE MARCHE on the Italian east coast, and is fabulous
value. Current stock is $10.00/bottle, but any future orders will be
$10.75/bottle

Looking forward to seeing you all,

Cheers,

Mick & Pauline
