FRANCE is much more than BORDEAUX, BURGUNDY and the RHÔNE – this week
we will explore some lesser-known regions.
1. We start in the FRONTON Appellation Contrôlée located in the area
between Toulouse and Montauban in the southwest. The CHATEAU
BOUISSEL 2003 CLASSIC ROUGE is a blend of 50% NEGRETTE, 20% SYRAH,
20% CABERNET FRANC and 10% CÔT (MALBEC). This medium to full-bodied
red wine was fermented in concrete tanks, hence the name “CLASSIC”,
and sees no wood. It is a wine with the flavors of blackcurrant, red
small fruits, and spices. It has a silky mouth feel followed by
smooth tannins - $12.00

2. We do not go too far away to taste a wine from CARBARDÈS, an
Appellation Contrôlée on the hills near the ancient city of
CAUCASSONNE (there is a picture on the back label). The CHÂTEAU de
PENNAUTIER 2004 ROUGE is a blend of Bordeaux elegance from CABERNET
SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, MALBEC and Languedoc sunshine from SYRAH and
GRENACHE. From the cigar-box nose to the ripe slightly peppery
palate, this is a silky yet full wine that will drink beautifully
over the next two years - $10.00
3. The Appellation Contrôlée FITOU has the distinction of being the
first area in the LANGUEDOC to get its own AC in 1948. The LURTON
family of BORDEAUX now owns CHÂTEAU des ERLES, and they have improved
the wines. The 2003 CUVÉE des ARDOISES is a blend of CARIGNAN,
GRENACHE and SYRAH in almost equal parts, aged for 14 months in oak.
The vines are planted on Schist (Ardoises in French) that is
sedimentary rocks and slate. The wine offers lots of black fruit
with wild herbal overtones, and the palate is followed by a gravely,
minerally, finish - $15.50

4. We now move to CORBIÈRES that is an Appellation Contrôlée to the
northeast of FITOU. We used this wine as a Club Selection a few
months ago, but when I found the distributor still had a few cases, I
thought it was a good opportunity to introduce it to a wider
audience. CLOS de l’ANHEL 2003 CORBIÈRES LES DIMANCHES is produced
by Sophie Guiraudon and Philippe Mathias who have a “day job”
managing Château Pech-Latt but tend to their own small vineyard at
the weekends. This is why they call their own wine “Les
Dimanches” (the Sundays). This is fascinating Corbières made from
organically grown grapes, 75% of which is old-vine CARIGNAN, the rest
being younger SYRAH. Surprisingly reticent for a wine from the hot
2003 vintage, this is a deep, brooding wine with exceptionally pure
fruit. At the moment it will show at its best with hearty food, but
the inherent balance of the wine indicates its aging potential. This
is a stupendous value Corbières that will benefit from a little
cellar aging - $18.75

5. For our final wine we move to PIC-SAINT-LOUP that does not have
its own Appellation Contrôlée but is looked upon as one of the Crus
of the COTEAUX de LANGUEDOC. CLOS MARIE is one of my favorite
producers from the area, and the 2004 L’OLIVETTE is their “entry
level” wine. A blend of almost equal parts of GRENACHE and SYRAH
with lesser amounts of MOURVÈDRE and CINSAULT, the wine was aged in
oak barrels, approximately 1/3 were new. The nose and palate offer
lots of black fruit with touches of blueberry; the oak is well
integrated, and the tannins smooth - $24.00

For our PREMIUM POUR we offer a dessert wine – possibly a Mothers’
Day Gift?

From the RIVESALTES Appellation Contrôlée comes DOMAINE JOLIETTE
1990 AMBRÉ. This is the current release of this wine, and is a blend
of GRENACHE BLANC, GRENACHE GRIS and MACABEU. This wine is best
summed-up as “liquid toffee”. Aromas of coffee, cocoa, caramel and
prunes are followed by a smooth palate and long finish. What is
wonderful is that you can keep an open bottle in your refrigerator
and it will not deteriorate for weeks - $24.75/500ml

TRY THIS WINE FOR $2.50/Taste or $4.00/2 ounces

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.
