EARL and COUNTESS LEVEL

HONIG 2006 SAUVIGNON BLANC, NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

This Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in stainless steel and then is aged
in a mix of stainless steel and used barrels. The winery also makes
a single vineyard, barrel-fermented version which is too oaky for
me. In this month’s wine, the short time in barrel rounds out the
mid-palate and softens some of the aggressiveness of Sauvignon
Blanc. There is lovely fruit that has touches of grapefruit, but
also the gooseberry nuances you find in many NZ Sauvignon Blancs.
The fruit is balanced by refreshing acidity.
Regular Price: $15.50 Member Price: $13.18

DOMAINE LIGNÈRES 2002 NOTRE DAME, CORBIÈRES, FRANCE

This is expensive for Corbières, but it is just about the best wine
I’ve tasted from this appellation. The wine is inky dark and has a
fabulous nose of black plum, earth, spice and a touch of vanillans,
and you can almost sense the warmth of the south of France. The
palate reflects the aromas together with a northern Rhône-like touch
of bacon. I was surprised to discover the wine is 100% Syrah, and
was aged in 100% new oak. The fruit is so intense that it masks the
amount of oak, and I thought there was some Carignan in the wine.

Regular Price: $31.00 Member Price: $26.35

Total Member Monthly Cost: $39.53

BARON and BARONESS LEVEL

JEAN-BAPTISTE ADAM 2004 PINOT BLANC RESERVE, ALSACE, FRANCE

With the price of Oregon Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc escalating
rapidly, more of us should look at the origin of these lovely wines –
Alsace. This is a new producer to me, but this Reserve is fabulous
value offering lots of rich fruit (you almost think it is going to be
too sweet), but this is balanced by good acidity. A great wine to
sip in your hot tub or to accompany many foods.

Regular Price: $15.50 Member Price: $13.18

DOMAINE GRAND NICOLET 2004 CÔTES du RHÔNE, FRANCE

The southern Rhône Valley continues to produce some of the best value
red wines on the planet…while the vast appellation also produces many
mediocre wines. With the wine glut in Europe, savvy importers can
find wonderful value wines. One such savvy importer is Portland’s
Don Oman of Casa Bruno. This Domaine is based in the village of
Rasteau, and this bottling does include some estate fruit. It is a
blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Carignan, offering lots of black
raspberry fruit from the Grenache and spice from the Carignan. The
wine has good balance and great length.

Regular Price: $11.50 Member Price: $09.77

Total Member Monthly Cost: $22.95
