SOUTHERN ITALY/SICILY

CHEESE PLATE
This week we will go with Italian cheeses to go with Italian wines –
I assume there is some logic in doing this somewhere!

Brigante Sheep’s
Milk Sardinia

This sheep’s milk cheese is relatively mild in the style of a
Pecorino Fresco.

Bra Tenero Cow’s
Milk Piemonte

The Piemontese village of Bra is the self-proclaimed cheese capital
of Europe. Bra Tenero is a younger version of Bra Duro, and both
have a delightfully piquant flavor. Obviously good with the “Killer
Bs” of Piemonte, let’s see how it goes with wines from further south…
and if it is uplifting…

Tartufo Cheese Cow’s
Milk Northwest Italy

This is a mild cheese from cow’s milk, infused with flecks of black
truffles.
SAMPLER PLATE COST $4.00

Southern Italy used to be the home of many dreadful mass produced
wines, but now it is a treasure chest of fabulous value wines.

1. We start in SICILY with the signature grape of the area, NERO
d’AVOLA. ABBAZIA SANTA ANASTASIA 2002 sees no oak, and offers gobs
of black fruit with a touch of spice - $13.50

2. Moving to the SALENTO region of PUGLIA we will taste a close clone
of Zinfandel, PRIMITIVO. While most Primitivos are lighter than most
Zinfandels, the ROSA del GOLFO 2004 PRIMITIVO is a substantial wine.
It offers almost the intensity of Zinfandels, but has a higher
acidity and a better balance to go with food - $18.00
3. We stay on the mainland and CAMPANIA. The great grape here is
AGLIANICO, but many wines are inaccessible in their youth. The
TERREDORA DIPAOLO 2005 is one of the most forward Aglianicos I’ve
tasted. It shows lots of the classic tar and floral aromas without
the massive tannins of many wines from this grape - $14.50

4. Going back to SICILY we offer BAGLIO DI PIANETTO. This estate is
dedicated to blending native varietals with international varietals.
The 2002 RAMIONE is a 50/50 blend of NERO d’AVOLA and MERLOT. On the
nose the wine offers lots of smoky black fruit with a touch of
vanillans. The palate is lush with black jam and then spice on the
finish. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and then aged in
Allier oak for about 12 months (50% new barrels) - $22.50

For a Premium Pour this week we offer:

BENANTI has been a favorite Sicilian producer in the shop mainly
because they promote the native varietals of Sicily. The ROVETELLO
1999 is a blend of 80% NERELLO MASCALESE and 20% NERELLO CAPPUCCIO
which is the same blend as the popular ROSSO di VERZELLA. The
difference between the two wines is the ROVETELLO was aged in new
barriques. Originally I thought this wine had too much oak, but two
years later the oak is much better integrated with the fruit. This
is a modern interpretation of traditional Sicilian wine. The grapes
are grown on head-trained vines at about 2500 ft. on the slopes of
Mount Etna - $32.50

TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.50/Taste or $6.50/4 ounces

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.
