Wines for Your July 4th Cook-Out

MEAT PLATE
This week it seemed appropriate to offer meat rather than cheese. We
asked New Seasons for thin slices, but did not realize how thin their
thin was - but we are sure you’ll enjoy these tastes!
Toscano Salami
Applegate Farm Pepperoni
Alps Sweet Sopressata

MEAT SAMPLER PLATE $2.00

Our tradition on the Friday before July 4th is to pour a selection of
USA wines suitable for your cookouts. Despite the fact Matt Kramer
in latest Sunday Oregonian recommended three furrin wines for your
cookout, we will stick to our tradition! (However, we do have two of
Kramer’s selections in stock for your drinking pleasure).

1. It can be hot near a grill, but reject beer and drink white wine.
With OREGON PINOT GRIS getting more expensive by the month, I’ve
looked for better value elsewhere. RON BUNNELL was a wine maker at
Ste. Michelle for several years, and then he started his own winery
in WASHINGTON under the BUNNELL FAMILY label. He has now decided to
keep that label for Rhône varietals and has launched the RIVER AERIE
label for other grapes. His 2006 COLUMBIA VALLEY PINOT GRIS under
this label is a lovely wine with lots of fruit but a nice crisp
finish and a great price - $12.50

2. We stay with the same winery for our next wine. The RIVER AERIE
2005 COLUMBIA VALLEY SANGIOVESE is almost a mini “Super Tuscan”
without the excessive oak of many of the “real things”. A blend of
90% SANGIOVESE and 10% CABERNET SAUVIGNON, the wine was aged in 2 and
3 year-old French barrels. It has lots of berry aromas and flavors
(strawberry, loganberry), and then a trace of cassis on the finish.
The tannins are refined, but the wine is big enough to go with many
meats including game - $15.50

3. When will MERLOT get its reputation back? Perhaps this wine will
help. The CHALONE VINEYARD 2003 MONTEREY COUNTY MERLOT is no soft
fruit bomb. Although it offers lots of rich, briary fruit, it has
good structure and length. To me it tastes as though there is some
CABERNET SAUVIGNON in the mix, although the website says the wine is
100% MERLOT - $15.00

4. JACKSON DOWNS is a new label for me and then I discovered it was a
label created by a CALIFORNIA winery especially for an importer in
England. Unfortunately the Englishman died of a heart attack before
the wine was shipped. His company was frozen because of legal
issues, and the winery had to unload the wine. A local distributor
bought it all, and we can offer the 2001 CALIFORNIA SYRAH at a
remarkable price. Not great SYRAH, but a good $10 bottle of wine now
available at - $6.00

5. I can still remember when we first tasted a B.R.COHN CABERNET
SAUVIGNON and we immediately bought a case. Somehow the winery
disappeared below most people’s radar screens. Now 17 years later we
offer their 2005 NORTH COAST SILVER LABEL CABERNET SAUVIGNON. The
wine is made from fruit from two the home vineyard, OLIVE HILL, and
other well-known vineyards. To me this is classic California
Cabernet Sauvignon; while still young it offers lots of cassis fruit,
some oak nuances, and well-integrated tannins. Lovely stuff - $19.50

For our PREMIUM POUR we move to a WALLA WALLA winery:
While July 4th is more about quaffing less expensive wines, we
thought we should have one slightly more expensive wine for you to
taste. SYZYGY is a new winery to me and, according to the label, the
word means the moment of perfect alignment between three celestial
bodies. On October 14, 2004 the sun, moon and earth aligned causing
a partial eclipse over Alaska and Hawaii, and the winery’s 2004
COLUMBIA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON celebrates that event. The wine
is a blend of fruit from the CONNER LEE (17 year old vines) and
SAGEMOOR (32 year old vines) vineyards, and was aged for 21 months in
French oak. The nose offers ripe cassis, vanillans and toast, and
the palate offers lots of ripe fruit and well-integrated oak. The
finish is long and the fruit intensity hides the 15+% alcohol - $32.50

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.00/Taste or $7.00/4 ounces

SATURDAY, JUNE 30th
Noon – 5:00PM
Free Tasting

As usual we will have two wines open for FREE TASTING. Current
selections are:

CHÂTEAU MIRAVEL 2005 CÔTEAUX VAROIS BLANC is from PROVENCE and is
made from 100% ROLLE. This is a wonderful summer white - $16.00

CHÂTEAU de la ROULERIE is based in ANJOU in FRANCE’S LOIRE VALLEY.
Their 2006 ANJOU ROUGE is 100% CABERNET FRANC offering lots of juicy
fruit with good acid balance but none of the “green flavors”
sometimes associated with Loire Cabernet Franc - $12.00
