CHEESE & SALAMI PLATES
This week we are adding a Salami Plate in addition to our usual
Cheese Plate.
Asiago Mezzano Cow’s
Milk NE Italy
The classic cheese from the northeast of Italy.
Cacio de Roma Sheep’s
Milk Lazio
This cheese is bathed in sea salt for 24 hours and then aged on wood
for 30 days. It is somewhat similar to Pecorino Fresco.
CHEESE SAMPLER PLATE $3.00
We offer two Italian meats:
Dry Salami
Sopressata
SALAMI SAMPLER PLATE $3.00
It would have been so easy to choose all VENETO wines, but we need to
try other areas as well. While we will taste three different styles
from VALPOLICELLA, the selection also includes wine from COLLIO and
ALTO ADIGE.
1. We start in COLLIO which is a DOC within the FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA
area. The BRANKO 2005 PINOT GRIGIO is not inexpensive, but is in a
class of its own relative to many “supermarket” Pinot Grigios. This
wine was awarded Tre Bichieri (the highest award) in the 2007 Gambero
Rosso Italian Wines, which said “elegance is the keynote of the 1000
cases released, which gives mixed fruit and tropical aromas and
firmness, intensity, freshness and persistence in the mouth”. What
more can I say? – the wine has more fruit than many Italian Grigios,
but it has that dry, minerally finish that is uniquely Italian - $19.75
2. Now to VENETO and VALPOLICELLA which is probably the best known
red wine from the area. While many lower-end such wines are thin and
acidic, the VAONA 2005 VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO is, to my palate, the
best value Valpolicella on the market today. A blend of the three
major varietals of VALPOLICELLA – CORVINA, RONDINELLA and MOLINARA -
the wine offers ripe berry fruit, a touch of spice, and a smidgen of
wood (40% of the wine spent time in large oak barrels) - $11.50
3. We now go further north to ALTO ADIGE. Often lumped together with
TRENTINO, the wines are different because ALTO ADIGE has more higher
elevation vineyards in the mountains. CASTELL SALLEGG is in KALTERN,
SÜD-TIROL, overlooking LAKE CALDARO. Their white grapes are grown on
the hillsides, but the red are on the flatter lands around the lake.
The 2000 LAGREIN RISERVA is drinking beautifully now, showing lots of
blackberry fruit with nice touches of spice and wood (the wine spent
18 months in a mix of French barriques and large oak barrels).
LAGREIN often has a slightly tart finish, but the years in the bottle
seem to have minimized this - $20.00
4. Back to VENETO and another style of VALPOLICELLA. The TOMMASI
2003 VALPOLICELLA RIPASSO is a classic of its type, and was awarded
Due Bichieri in the 2006 Gambero Rosso Italian Wines. A RIPASSO is a
VALPOLICELLA that has been refermented on the dried skins of the
grapes used to produce AMARONE. This imparts a richness to ripe red
berry fruit, adds a hint of raisins to the wine, and adds complexity.
- $21.50

Once again we offer two PREMIUM POURs, both from the VENETO:
We go back to the producer VAONA and their 2003 CASTAROTO. This wine
just has a IGT ROSSO del VERONESE as it does not meet the
VALPOLICELLA DOC rules as far as grape varieties. The wine is a
blend of 50% CORVINA CORVINONE (a special clone of CORVINA), 30%
RABOSO, 10% CABRUSINA and 10% OSELETA. As with AMARONE, the grapes
are partially dried before fermentation which gives a rich, slightly
raisiny quality to the wine. The wine goes very well with game. A
poor man’s AMARONE? - $27.00
TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.00/Taste or $5.50/4 ounces
After one “poor man’s AMARONE”, how about another? BERTANI is one of
the best-known producers in the VALPOLICELLA area. A few years ago
they started a new product line under the VILLA NOVARE label (this is
their home property). The VILLA NOVARE 2000 VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO
SUPERIORE “OGNISANTI” is produced from a single vineyard in the
OGNISANTI CRU which is a small area of south-facing, hillside
vineyards. A blend of 65% CORVINA, 30% RONDINELLA and 5% MOLINARA,
the grapes are partially dried before fermentation. This is a rich
VALPOLICELLA with touches of earth and raisins on the nose. The
palate is substantial with flavors of black fruits and spice, and the
finish very long - $36.00
TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.00/Taste or $7.50/4 ounces
TASTE BOTH FOR $6.50
NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
