Wines of Germany with Ewald Moseler
CHEESE PLATES
I can’t remember having a German cheese, but I found three for this
week.
King’s Cheese Raw Cow’s
Milk Bavaria
Beer Cheese Raw Cow’s
Milk Bavaria
Hirtenkäse Cow’s
Milk Alpine Region
CHEESE SAMPLER PLATE $4.00
As with our Austrian tasting, we have let EWALD MOSELER choose some
of the wines he imports. Hence I’m not giving you my tasting notes,
come and hear Ewald talk about them.
Ewald has chosen a range of wines from WACHTENBURG WINZER EG from the
PFALZ region. There are both red and white wines, and the white
wines represent the current popularity of dry wines in Germany.
1. WACHTENBURG WINZER 2005 PINOT GRIS - $12.00
Come and see whether Germany is better value than Oregon for Pinot Gris!
2. WACHTENBURG WINZER 2005 WACHEHEIMER SCHENKENBÖHL RIESLING SPÄTLESE
TROCKEN - $23.25
This is a ‘dry’ Spätlese, much in the style of an Austrian Smaragd
.
3. WACHTENBURG WINZER 2005 SPÄTBURGUNDER - $17.50
Now Oregon Pinot Noir is getting expensive, taste what Germany is
doing with the grape.
4. WACHTENBURG WINZER 2005 DORNFELDER - $17.50
Dornfelder is a grape “crossing” described by Jancis Robinson as the
most promising of Germany’s red crossings. The grape was bred by
August Herold in 1956 at Weinsburg, and its ancestry includes
Tollinger, Limberger, Portugeiser and Frühburgunder.
TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00
For our OPTIONAL POUR we offer a red blend:
WACHTENBURG WINZER 2004 PFALZ CUVÉE - $24.00
This is a blend of MERLOT, SPÄTBURGUNDER, DORNFELDER and a local
clone of CABERNET.
TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.00/Taste or $5.00/4 ounces
NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.
SATURDAY, JULY 28th
Noon – 5:00 PM
As usual, we will have a couple of interesting wines open for free
tasting, and these are the provisional choices:
For a white we offer a lovely wine for the summer – and a recent Matt
Kramer rave in The Sunday Oregonian. DOMAINE ALAIN BRUMONT 2006 GROS
MANSENG is a VIN de PAYS from GASCONY in the southwest of FRANCE.
Kramer said “This is a succulent, distinctive dry white wine that
delivers a decided whiff and taste of lemon curd allied with just the
barest touch of honey, all uplifted by good acidity and a
surprisingly long finish or aftertaste. This is a terrific all-round
summer white. It will work with all the usual fish suspects, or serve
as a terrific aperitif or sunset sipper”. What more can I say! - $9.75
For the red we go to ITALY and the LE MARCHE region on the east
coast. Near the border with ABRUZZO is the region producing ROSSO
PICENO wines. Many of the wines from this area are great value at
$10-12, but the SALADINI PILASTRI 2003 “MONTETINELLO” ROSSO PICENO
SUPERIORE is stupendous value at $12.75 The wine is a blend of 70%
MONTEPULCIANO and 30% SANGIOVESE, and was another recent “Kramer Rave”.
Cheers,
Pauline & Mick
