Spain is a great country for wine bargains. Many areas in the 1970s
produced “gut rot”, but now there has been much investment in
vineyards and facilities. Until many of these areas become known as
great producers, there are values available.

1. After that talk of value wines, we start with a pricey white! The
BASQUE country produces a lovely white wine from the HONDARRABI ZURI
grape. These are TXACOLI (pronounced Chacoli) wines, and the
Denominación de Origen we will taste is GETARIAKO TXACOLINA. The
producer is TALAI-BERRI and we will taste their 2006 OREKA. This is
a wonderful example of the grape – great to taste on its own, or a
wonderful accompaniment to seafood - $21.75

2. After that expensive excursion into wonderful whites we will taste
a great value red. From LA MANCHA comes the CONDESA de LEGANZA 2003
CRIANZA. This wine is 100% TEMPRANILLO (called CENCIBEL in the area)
aged for 12 months in American oak barriques. It offers gobs of
black fruit wrapped in oak – if it came from RIOJA it would be much
more expensive - $10.00

3. We now move to YECLA and that area’s signature grape, MONASTRELL
(MOUVÈDRE). BODEGAS ANTONIO CANDELA BARAHONDA makes several wines
and their 2005 M4 is in the middle of the pack. While this wine does
not offer the earthiness of a typical South of France Mouvèdre, it
offers lots of black fruit, spice and herbs - $12.50

4. Our final wine comes from RIBERO del DUERO, and it is 100%
TEMPRANILLO. This is a very modern-style Spanish wine as it shows
some new oak (40% new French) and lots of black fruit with spice and
oak. This is a soft, elegant wine to sip on the deck or to accompany
red meats - $21.75

TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00

For our PREMIUM POUR we remain in RIBERO del RIBERO:

ALEJANDRO FERNÁNDEZ is the person who put this region on the world
wine map and PESQUERA is his flagship wine. We offer his 2004 TINTO
based on pre-sell pricing. Any purchases beyond current stock will
be at a much higher price (if any is still available). Rated
outstanding in The Wine Advocate, February 2007 “This superb,
beautifully balanced effort should evolve for 4-6 years and drink
well for another 10-15” - $30.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.50/Taste or $6.00/4 ounces

SATURDAY, JULY 21st
Noon – 5:00 PM
As usual, we will have a couple of interesting wines open for free
tasting – I’ve yet to decide which ones!

Cheers,
