OREGON “NEWCOMER/SMALL” PINOT NOIR PRODUCERS
CHEESE PLATE
We have sought out an international selection of cheese to go with
the wines:
Cacio de Roma Sheep’s
Milk Lazio, Italy
This cheese is bathed in sea salt for 24 hours and then aged on wood
for 30 days. It is somewhat similar to Pecorino Fresco.
Hawes Neal’s Yard Dairy Wensleydale Cow’s Milk
Yorkshire, England
From God’s Country (Mick’s home county), and a favorite of a certain
cartoon character, this is also a favorite cheese in many pubs where
it will be served with such gourmet treats as Branston Pickle rather
than Pinot Noir!
H. Ruhn’s Morbier Cow’s
Milk Franche-Comté
From one of the region’s most famous affineurs comes this cheese
recommended as a great accompaniment to red Burgundy. Ignore the
strong smell as it is a mild cheese with a pleasant nutty aftertaste.
SAMPLER PLATE COST $3.00
There seems to be a new Oregon winery popping-up every few days so I
thought it time to give some of the newer/small producers some
exposure. I think all the wines are very good or very good value,
but I’ll refrain from my own tasting notes and let you make-up your
own minds.
1. WETHERELL VINEYARDS 2002 BARREL SELECT OREGON PINOT NOIR – the
distributor says this was bottled for an out-of-state project that
did not happen. At today’s Oregon Pinot Noir pricing, it has to be
good value - $14.50
2. APOLLONI 2004 PINOT NOIR, WILLAMETTE VALLEY – we have sold lots of
their Pinot Gris, now it is the time for the Pinot Noir - $27.50
3. BOEDECKER CELLARS 2004 ATHENA PINOT NOIR, WILLAMETTE VALLEY –
Athena Pappas and Stewart Boedecker make two distinct cuvées in most
vintages. In 2003 I preferred Stewart’s, in 2004 Athena’s - $28.75
4. ANAM CARA CELLARS 2004 PINOT NOIR, NICHOLAS ESTATE, WILLAMETTE
VALLEY – Anam Cara is Celtic for soul friend, and the back label
describes the owners’ philosophy - $28.75
TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $12.00
For this week we offer as a Premium Pour:
WAHLE VINEYARDS and CELLARS 2005 HOLMES HILL PINOT NOIR, WILLAMETTE
VALLEY – this is Mark Wahle’s first Estate Pinot Noir, and hopefully
he will be here during part of the tasting (he is a regular customer)
- $34.50
TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.50/Taste or $7.00/4 ounces
NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.
SATURDAY, January 27th
Noon – 5 PM
Free tasting
As usual we will have a couple of wines open for free tasting. The
provisional selections are:
CARLOS ARANDA 2006 PEDRO XIMENEZ, MENDOZA, ARGENTINA – the PX grape
is normally associated with Sherry, but this wine, made from
organically-grown grapes, makes an interesting dry white wine…fino
sherry without the alcohol! - $7.50
DEAKIN ESTATE 2003 CABERNET SAUVIGNON, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA – we have
sold many cases of this producer’s Shiraz, now come and taste the
equally good value Cab - $6.75
Looking forward to seeing you all,
Cheers,
Mick
