AUSSIE REDS
This week we are taking a different approach to our tasting – there
will be five wines in the flight and no Premium Pour (of course, any
of the wines can be purchased by the 4 ounce glass). Most of you
know I’m not one to quote “points” (well, not very often), but this
week all wines were rated “Outstanding” in Robert Parker’s “The Wine
Advocate”. However, I’m not quoting actual points as for most
palates there is so little difference between 90 and 94.
1. We start with 2005, the latest vintage of BLACK CHOOK SHIRAZ (95%)
and VIOGNIER (5%) blend. This wine, from wine maker Ben Riggs (of
Mr. Riggs Shiraz fame), is made from McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek
fruit. It is aged in used French oak and offers lots of blackberry
fruit married with pepper and spice. Parker says “The wine offers
high levels of seduction, lushness, and richness at a ridiculously
low price” - $18.00
2. When I think of MALBEC I think of Argentina or France’s Cahors,
never Australia. However the FERNGROVE ESTATE 2004 “KING” MALBEC
from WESTERN AUSTARLIA shows “Down Under” is a match for Argentina.
It offers gobs of blueberry fruit coupled with some spice. Parker
says “This pure wine has outstanding depth and concentration and a 40
+ second finish…it will be even better in 4-6 years”.” - $17.50
3. BAROSSA VALLEY’S LANGMEIL has consistently produced great wine –
at a price! Now their “entry level” wine is showing promise. The
2005 “THREE GARDENS” is a blend of 46% SHIRAZ, 44% GRENACHE and 10%
MOUVEDRE from vines up to 130 years old. This, to me, although
obviously Aussie, is a close match to many Southern Rhône wines.
Parker says “An excellent value. This elegant blend exhibits notes
of anise, wood smoke, blackberries, cherries, pepper and earth” -
$18.00
4. A new producer to me is DE LISIO from the McLAREN VALE. His wines
($35 - $60) have always been highly rated by Parker and this week I
tasted his “entry level” wine, the 2005 QUARTERBACK (I’m beginning to
think Aussieland is like Walla Walla, the blends are the deals).
This wine is a blend of SHIRAZ, GRENACHE, MERLOT and CABERNET
SAUVIGNON that has been aged in old French oak. I was intrigued by
this wine as it did not shout “I’m Australian”, but offered lots of
rich cassis fruit coupled with spice and an almost Rhône Valley touch
of saddle leather. Parker said, “Full-bodied as well as elegant,
restrained, and Eurocentric in character, it should be consumed over
the next 6-10 years”- $20.00
5. MASSENA is just about my favorite SHIRAZ producer (OK, I can’t
afford Grange!), but even their The Eleventh Hour is getting
expensive. I recently discovered EPSILON 2004 COALSACK SHIRAZ from
the BAROSA VALLEY and thought it was great value. I then looked at
the back label that said “Produced and bottled by Massena Vineyards
Pty. Ltd.”. While full-bodied and offering lots of blueberry and
raspberry fruit, the wine has great balance, the spice balancing the
exuberant fruit. Parker rated the 2005 (not yet available in Oregon)
even higher calling it “A hedonistic tour de force in winemaking” -
$17.25
