WORLD SYRAH
CHEESE PLATE
Monterey Jack Cow’s
Milk USA
A relatively mild cheese but recommended on many websites to go with
Syrah.
Mahon Cow’s
Milk Spain
We’ve used this before – from the island of Menorca, it almost tastes
like sheep’s milk cheese.
Pecorino Pepato Sheep’s
Milk Italy
Pecorino can be a hard grating cheese, but this is not the case for
this young cheese. This version is covered in black pepper and so
the flavor well matches Syrah.
SAMPLER PLATE COST $3.00
1. We start with a mix of Washington and Oregon. The BASKET CASE
2004 SYRAH is from WASHINGTON FRUIT but made in OREGON. It offers
lots of up-front fruit, but is not a simple fruit bomb - $11.25
2. I did not intend to include an Aussie wine as their SHIRAZ is very
distinctive. However the ANDREW HARRIS 2001 SHIRAZ from the MUDGEE
region of NEW SOUTH WALES is the most “Un-Aussie” Shiraz I have ever
tasted. This comment is not meant as a negative. From one of the
oldest wine regions, this is a beautifully balanced wine, offering
lots of blackberry fruit balanced by some new oak - $12.50
3. We now move to SOUTH AMERICA and CHILE. CASA LAPOSTELLE is a
joint venture between Chilean interests and the owners of France’s
GRAND MARNIER. The 2004 CUVÉE ALEXANDRE SYRAH from LAS KURAS
vineyard in the CACHAPOAL VALLEY is wonderful. The nose is almost
Northern Rhône with touches of bacon fat and black fruits, but the
palate shows a more New World fruit-forward style. Can this be the
best balance between New and Old Worlds? - $27.00
4. GREECE is now making some fabulous wines – forget cheap Retsina
(but encourage great Retsina, it does exist). Normally I’m only the
fan of the native varietals, but this wine hit a mark with me.
DOMAINE GEROVASSILIOU 2003 SYRAH is from EPANOMI which is just
southwest of THESSALONIKI. Its nose has the gamey notes and spices
reminiscent of Côte Rôtie, but the palate is more “Western” in style,
and the overall result is great wine (Editor’s choice in The Wine
Enthusiast) - $26.50
TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00
For a Premium Pour we offer:
WASHINGTON seems to think they make the best SYRAH in the USA – let’s
find out! BUNNELL FAMILY CELLARS is a new producer to me, but this
bottling made me a believer. The 2004 HORSE HEAVEN HILLS SYRAH,
while a little woody for my European palate, is lovely wine. Lots of
black plum fruit, vanillans, spice – the wine has it all (92 pts in
The Wine Speculator) - $39.75
TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces
NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.
SATURDAY, February 17th
Noon – 5 PM
Free tasting
As usual we will have a couple of wines open for free tasting. The
provisional selections are:
2005 SOLÀ FRED from SPAIN’S MONSANT - a blend of 90% CARIGNAN and
10% GARNACHA, this wine was recommended by a colleague of Pauline’s
and is fabulous value wine - $9.00
We keep up the SPANISH influence with our second wine. CASTILLO del
BARÓN wines were introduced to me by a customer. The 2005 100%
MONASTRELL (MOUVÈDRE) is from YECLA. It offers gobs of sweet, black
fruit, and is hard to resist! - $10.00
Looking forward to seeing you all,
Cheers,
Mick
