WINES OF PIEMONTE

CHEESE PLATE
Our cheese plate offers a selection of Italian Cheese:
Brigante Sheep’s
Milk Sardinia
This sheep’s milk cheese is relatively mild in the style of a
Pecorino Fresco.
Crucolo Cow’s
Milk Trentino
A soft cheese that has a mild, but nutty flavor.
Tartufo Cheese Cow’s
Milk Northwest Italy
This is a mild cheese from cow’s milk, infused with flecks of black
truffles.
CHEESE SAMPLER PLATE COST $4.00
As the weather is forecasted to be on a warming trend, we have
included one of the great white wines of Piemonte in the tasting.

1. There are three main white grapes grown in Piemonte – ARNEIS,
CORTESE and MOSCATO. We will taste FILIPPO GALLINO’s 2005 ARNEIS.
ARNEIS is one type of wine that I can remember when I first tasted
it. It was at a time when most Italian whites I’d tasted were
mediocre at best – all acid and no fruit – but ARNEIS set the light
bulbs flashing. The grape offers a floral and fruity nose with
nuances of apple and banana, all of which is reflected on the
palate. This is followed by a dry, minerally, finish. Great as an
aperitif, or to accompany many seafood and vegetable dishes. This
wine was awarded “Two Glasses” in Gambero Rosso (the Italian wine
guide), and no other Arneis received a higher rating in the 2007
edition - $14.00

2. DOLCETTO is a difficult grape for many people – the name means
“little sweet one”, but many wines have some bitterness on the
finish. The wine is an every day drink in Piemonte and is drunk on
its own and together with food. The NADA FIORENZO 2004 DOLCETTO
D’ALBA offers lots of fruit with only a touch of a bitter finish -
$15.75
3. Northern Piemonte has many NEBBIOLO-based wines that do not get
the attention of Barolo and Barbaresco. PROPRIETA SPERINO 2004
UVAGGIO is from the COSTE della SESIA ROSSO which is a DOC just to
the west of GATTINARA. This wine is a blend of NEBBIOLO, VESPOLINA,
and CROATINA. It offers many of the aromatics of a good Pinot Noir,
the structure and tannins of Nebbiolo, and a long finish - $30.00

4. I’ve tasted so many BARBERA wines over the last few weeks, it was
difficult to select a “winner”. I was going to pour the 2004
RAPALINO (which we have in stock), but this week I tasted the
MARCHESI di BAROLO 2004 BARBERA d’ALBA “RUVEI” and decided this was
the wine to use. This is another “Two Glass” winner in Gambero
Rosso, and the wine offers lots of berry fruit, has good grip, and a
long finish. At the moment it is better with food, but give it a
year and it will be a great wine to sip on its own - $15.00

TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00

For our Premium Pour we go to BARBARESCO:

1999 was a great “traditional” vintage in Barbaresco/Barolo, but many
of the wines need time to come around. The PRODUTTORI del
BARBARESCO, the world’s most famous cooperative, made great wines
in1999. The MONTIFICO RISERVA has been the most backward of the nine
single vineyard wines, but is now just coming around. While it is
great now with food, this wine will be tremendous in about five
years. Take this advantage to buy a collectible wine at a reasonable
price (replacement cost is $45.00) - $39.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.

SATURDAY, April 7th

Free tasting

As usual we will have a couple of wines open for free tasting. Our
provisional selections are:

Jay Sommers of J. Christopher Wines makes many lovely wines (we have
his just released 2005 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir available at
$22.50), but his “entry level” wines under the ZOOT ALLURES label are
wonderful value. We will pour :
ZOOT ALLURES 2005 BLANC which is 60% SAUVIGNON BLANC, 20% PINOT GRIS
with small amounts of CHARDONNAY and RIESLING - $13.50
ZOOT ALLURES 2005 ROUGE which is a blend of CABERNET SAUVIGNON,
MERLOT and SYRAH - $13.50

Looking forward to seeing you all,

Cheers,
