RED BURGUNDY
FOR THIS WEEK’S CHEESE WE WILL HAVE CHEESE SUITABLE FOR RED BURGUNDY:
DELICES de BOURGOGNE AND CHAOURCE FROM BURGUNDY, AND DOUBLE
GLOUCESTER FROM ENGLAND (ALL THREE ARE COW’S MILK). SAMPLE PLATES $5.00
Burgundy, the home of Pinot Noir, is one of the most frustrating wine
regions of the world. One can spend a lot of money and can be in
Pinot Noir heaven…or hell! This week we have tried to find wines
with a good price : quality ratio, as well as having an affordable
price. To keep the price of the tasting reasonable we have mainly
stayed with the wines from the Côte de Beaune. Wines from the Côte
de Nuits are often better, but can be get expensive.
1. We start with one of my favorite producers from the CÔTE DE
BEAUNE, CATHERINE et CLAUDE MARÉCHAL. They are based in BLIGNY-les
BEAUNE, but their most famous wine is the SAVIGNY-les BEAUNE, which
in a recent NY Times article on “Village” Burgundies was voted “best
value”. (we have the 2004 in stock at $33.50). We will taste their
2004 BOURGOGBE ROUGE “CUVÉE GRAVEL”. This wine is too good to be
just a “Bourgogne Rouge”. The fruit comes from 40+ year-old vines in
a vineyard with gravelly soil, hence the cuvée name. Wonderful berry
aromas are followed by a medium-bodied palate of pure, almost
opulent, red fruit. This is classic Burgundian Pinot Noir - $22.00
2. Our one wine from the CÔTE DE NUITS is JOSEPH ROTY 2000 BOURGOGNE
ROUGE “CUVÉE de PRESSONNIER”. ROTY is a great producer, and this
wine is from a single vineyard in GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN. I have not
tasted this vintage as it is in short supply. and am relying on a
distributor’s palate that I respect (I’ve tasted later vintages of
this wine). The wine is from 50 year-old vines, and the barrels used
for aging are 25% new. This is very serious Bourgogne Rouge - $28.50
3. We now move to the village of VOLNAY, and DOMAINE HUBER-VERDEREAU
2004 VOLNAY “LES ROBARDELLES”. The vines for this wine are from the
“village end” of the vineyard rather than the Premier Cru section.
At this year’s IPNC I loved this wine, and when I knew the price, it
was “Wow!” On the nose it offers dark berry fruit together with
violets and subtle oak. The palate is medium weight with fine
tannins and great depth. Allen Meadows of Burghound.com (a great
Burgundy reviewer) says “A terrific effort at this level and highly
recommended. Drink 2010+”. I think it is drinkable much earlier -
$30.00
4. We stay in VOLNAY for DOMAINE PASCAL BOULEY 2002 VOLNAY PREMIER
CRU “CHAMPANS”. PASCAL et RÉYANE BOULEY are the sixth generation of
the family running this estate. Most of the vines are old, and while
this wine is big and muscular for a VOLNAY, it is another pure
expression of PINOT NOIR, but still has a chewy finish. It should
begin to reach its peak in 4 years. The Burghound said “A really
lovely effort that is extremely promising” - $39.00
TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $15.00
This week’s PREMIUM POUR:
Just north of VOLNAY is the village of POMMARD. DOMAINE THIERRY
VIOLOT- GUILLEMARD looks for finesse when many domains just look for
power. This Domaine’s wines are exclusive to Oregon. The 2004
POMARD PREMIER CRU “ LA PLATIÈRE” is from a 0.7 hectare plot (1.7
acres) of vines planted in 1936. The wine has a gorgeous nose of red
fruit with nuances of earth and spice. It has dense fruit on the
palate, but at the moment has dusty, mouth-coating tannins; give this
wine until at least 2010 (the Burghound said “Terrific complexity –
lovely stuff”) - $40.00
TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces
SATURDAY, September 23rd
Free tasting
Noon – 5:00PM
As usual we will have a couple of interesting wines open for free
tasting; at the moment we are planning:
For a white we go to ITALY. These days it is hard to ignore Italian
whites. Ten years ago there was so much garbage white wine coming
out of Italy, the good wines were ignored. Now there are a multitude
of good white wines. The COLLE STEFANO 2005 VERDICCHIO di MATELICA
is a wonderful white for seafood; it is more muscular and firmly
structured than the more common VEDICCHIO dei CASTELLI di JESI. The
vineyards are at a higher altitude and are cooled by mountain air
from the west rather than warmer sea breezes from the east - $13.75
For a red we will pour PROTOCOLO 2005. This is a 100% TEMPRANILLO
wine from SPAIN’S TIERRA de CASTILLA. This is a stunning value wine
given 87 points and “Best Value” from The Wine Spectator - $7.50
Looking forward to seeing you all,
Cheers,
Mick Beard
