FRIDAY, September 15, 4:30 - 7:00pm

WE ARE CONTINUING OUR CHEESE PROGRAM. THIS WEEK WE WILL HAVE THE
SAME SAMPLER PLATE AS LAST WEEK - COMTÉ (France, Cow’s milk),
MANCHEGO (Spain, Sheep’s milk), and COASTAL CHEDDAR (England, Cow’s
milk) FOR $3.00.

IN ADDITION WE WILL HAVE INDIVIDUAL PORTIONS OF ROCCOLO, A COW’S MILK
CHEESE MADE BY THE ARRIGONI FAMILY IN ITALY’S LOMBARDY REGION - $1.00

CALIFORNIA CABERNET SAUVIGNON

This week, in response to some requests for more expensive wines in
our basic flight, we will be pouring two moderately priced wines and
two more expensive wines. As a result of these requests, the price
this week has to be increased to $12.00
1. We start with one of California’s old-time producers, LOUIS
MARTINI. The 2003 SONOMA COUNTY is their “entry level” CABERNET
SAUVIGNON. In this time of many high-end ultra-modern megabuck
wineries it is easy to forget what the “old establishment” can do.
The wine shows soft black fruit on the front palate, and then spice
on the finish. It is well-balanced, held together with moderate oak.
- $14.50

2. We move east to the NAPA VALLEY to taste AVALON 2004. The 2003
was a big hit at one of our tastings earlier this year, and the 2004
is even better. It is classic NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON at a
very modest price. It offers gobs of cassis fruit on the nose and
palate, obvious but not intrusive oak, and lovely balance and
length. GREAT VALUE - $17.50

3. I used to think of J. LOHR as bargain-priced wines. Do you
remember the restaurant Crêpe Faire? They used to have bottles of J.
LOHR on the table, trying to get you to pay $18.00 for what was then
a $5.99 retail bottle of wine (this was 1990). Perhaps this fixed my
mind set until I got to try more of their wines. The J. LOHR 2003
HILLTOP VINEYARD is from PASO ROBLES, and is one of the best I’ve
tasted from this producer. The wine is a blend of 95% CABERNET
SAUVIGNON together with small amounts of CABERNET FRANC, MALBEC and
PETIT VERDOT. It was aged for 20 months in French Oak (83% new), and
this amount of new oak is not obvious in the wine. It is rich with
lots of cassis and blackberry fruit, great texture and length. It is
more in the style of some MEDOCS than of some Californian wines - $29.00

4. It was difficult to decide whether to use this wine as the Premium
Pour as it is the most expensive wine this week; however this wine is
more in line with the style of the rest of the flight than the older
wine which is our Premium Pour. We have sold BENNET LANE MAXIMUS, a
Bordeaux-styled blend, for a couple of vintages, and now we offer
their 2003 CABERNET SAUVIGNON. This is a big, rich, modern-style
CABERNET SAUVIGNON, offering gobs of cassis fruit, spice and oak, but
it succeeds by having good balance - $43.00

This week we offer as a PREMIUM POUR:

In LOS ANGELES there is a winery called MADDELENA which makes wines
from family owned vineyards in MONTEREY and PASO ROBLES. The RIBOLI
FAMILY have been doing this since 1917 (they were one of the biggest
producers of sacramental wine during Prohibition). In the mid-1980s
the family purchased a vineyard in NAPA VALLEY’s RUTHERFORD area.
The vineyard is situated between the CAYMUS and BECKSTOFFER
vineyards, and the vines came from cuttings from the EISELE
VINEYARD. Tonight we offer the RIBOLI FAMILY VINEYARD 1999 CABERNET
SAUVIGNON. Aged in French oak (only 35% new), this is an elegant
mouthful just coming into its own. It shows wild berry and ripe plum
flavors together with some vanillans. The tannins are well-
integrated into the long finish. While lovely now, the wine should
age for another 5-7 years - $39.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces

SATURDAY, September 16th

  Free tasting

Noon – 5:00PM

As usual we will have a couple of interesting wines open for free
tasting, and any remaining cheese will be available for purchase. At
the moment we are planning:

REGALEALI 2004 BIANCO – this wine from SICILY is a blend of the local
varietals INZOLIA, CATARATTO and GRECANICO. It offers apple fruit in
a way similar to a Mâcon, and then has a touch of pine nuts on the
long, crisp finish - $10.00

For a red we will pour CHASSEUR de BROUSSES 2004 Vin de Pays d’OC.
This country wine from the LANGUEDOC is a blend of GRENACHE,
MOURVÈDRE and SYRAH. This is an easy-drinking mouthful mainly
showing black raspberry from the GRENACHE together with an earthy
edge from the MOURVÈDRE. GREAT VALUE - $11.00

Looking forward to seeing you all,

Cheers,
