EARL and COUNTESS LEVEL
RUTZ CELLARS MAISON GRAND CRU 2004 CHARDONNAY, RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY,
CALIFORNIA, USA
This month we are “going back to basics” with a classic CALIFORNIAN
CHARDONNAY. This grape provides such a wide range of styles when it
comes to wine making – barrel fermentation or not, new oak or not,
malolactic fermentation or not, the list goes on. The contrast
between a stony, minerally Chablis with a buttery, oaky, California
Chardonnay could not be greater. As most of you know, I prefer the
Chablis end of the spectrum. However, if you are looking for an
oaky, rich, creamy, Chardonnay, this wine fits the bill at a much
lower price than, say, Rombauer. GREAT VALUE.

MOCALI 2004 ROSSO di MONTALCINO, TOSCANA, ITALY
MOCALI is one of the great value producers in the Montalcino region –
despite getting good reviews, their wines remain reasonably priced.
The 2001 Brunellos received 90 and 93 from The Wine Spectator, and
this 2004 ROSSO is one of the best 2004 Rossos I’ve tasted. These
Rossos are “baby Brunellos”, being 100% SANGIOVESE GROSSO, and
usually made from the youngest vines on the property. This wine puts
many Chianti reserves to shame. It has classic Sangiovese fruit with
touches of bitter almond on the finish, but it has a richness not
usually found in Sangiovese wines at this piece. In addition it has
the earthy, leathery nuances that make Brunellos so good. This is
FABULOUS JUICE!

BARON and BARONESS LEVEL
EUGENE WINE CELLARS 2004 VIOGNIER, OREGON, USA
VIOGNIER was supposed to the next “big white wine”, but this has not
happened - yet. For me the problem for USA versions has been too
much alcohol or too much residual sugar. Local wine makers have told
me that to get the hang-time to develop full flavors, it is hard to
avoid the high sugar levels which lead to high alcohol or sweetness.
My answer is “How come producers in the south of France, where it is
hot, can get the flavor without the high alcohol?” Finally a local
producer, EUGENE WINE CELLARS, has hit a home run. This VIOGNIER has
great aromatics, great flavor, is just a touch off-dry, but comes in
at 12.5% alcohol. BRAVO!

MICHAEL POZZAN 2004 CABERNET SAUVIGNON SPECIAL RESERVE, ALEXANDER
VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, USA
For this month’s red we stay domestic. MICHAEL POZZAN brings us
ANNABELLA and his NAPA CUVÉE CABERNET SAUVIGNONS which are wonderful
value wines. This bottling is from ALEXANDER VALLEY in SONOMA COUNTY
rather than his usual NAPA VALLEY sources. It is not as big as the
Napa wines, but is elegant with beautiful balance. With Annabella
increasing in price, this is now his best value bottling.
Regular Price: $12.00
Member Price: $10.20
Total Member Monthly Cost: $22.95
