THIS WEEK’S SAMPLER PLATES
With the large-style wines coming out of Australia, we decided to use
a Cheese Sampler just based on Cheddar-style cheeses. As a kid in
England I was fed many types of “Cheddar” from “The Colonies”
including Australia, but this week I could not find any Aussie
Cheddar in Portland. However we offer Cheddar from three countries:
DUBLINER from IRELAND – let’s face it, many Irish “convicts” were
sent to Australia
EXTRA SHARP from NEW YORK STATE – home to many Irish and Englishmen
FARMHOUSE from ENGLAND – a Cheddar from a single farm’s cow herd
SAMPLER PLATE $2.00
With the English influence in Australia, we thought a SAUSAGE PLATE
might go well with the wines. Our plate includes slices of:
ENGLISH-style PORK BANGERS
NEW SEASONS’ HAZELNUT/BRANDY/PORK SAUSAGES
SAMPLER PLATE $2.00
RED WINES OF AUSTRALIA
This tasting we have stayed mainly at the lower end of the price
scale and stayed with Shiraz except for one of the wines. There is a
glut of grapes in Australia which leads to some great value wines.
1. BAROSSA VALLEY ESTATES has made some value-priced wines for
several years, but the current 2003 SPIRES SHIRAZ BAROSSA VALLEY
takes some beating. While obviously “Aussie”, the wine is not “over-
the-top”. It offers lots of black fruit, spice, and nice balancing
acidity. Wonderful value - $9.00
2. BLEASDALE is from the LANGHORNE CREEK area of SOUTH AUSTARLIA
which is just southeast of the McLAREN VALE. Their 2001 BREMERVIEW
SHIRAZ is drinking superbly at the moment. It has lots of fruit, a
touch of eucalyptus, and a long, softish finish – it is difficult not
to drink too much of this wine!- $17.50
3. We stay in the LANGHORNE CREEK area for the WINNER’S TANK 2005
SHIRAZ. This wine is made by KAESLER’S wine maker (their cheapest
Shiraz is $26.00). The wine is almost black in color, and probably
needs a little cellar time to show its true worth. However it
already offers a rich, black fruit nose, a spicy palate, and a long
finish - $14.25
4. BEN RIGGS is one of the great wine makers of the McLAREN VALE, and
his wines can be expensive (see our Premium Pour). The 2005 THE
GAFFER is his “entry level” SHIRAZ. Another wine that is almost
black in color, and one that is more restrained than the Winner’s
Tank. The wine has a lovely nose of fruit, spice and oak, leading
you to think it is going to be very fruit-forward. However the
palate is still somewhat tight, but the elements are all there that
show this will be a lovely wine in about six to twelve months. - $20.00
5. The Aussies are good at making blends, and so we should try at
least one. HOUGHTON, from WESTERN AUSTRALIA is one of the oldest
wineries in Australia. Their 2004 blend of SHIRAZ, CABERNET
SAUVIGNON and MERLOT shows the predominance of the SHIRAZ in the
blend (70%), but the wine also shows a touch of cassis from the
Cabernet, and a slight chocolate influence on the finish, presumably
from the Merlot. The wine also has a lovely mouth feel, which makes
it too easy to drink! Another lovely value - $12.50

This week our PREMIUM POUR is:
MR. RIGGS 2004 SHIRAZ, McLAREN VALE – this wine is a perennial Robert
Parker “rave” (this vintage scored 95). Parker said “The Shiraz is
aged 18 months in French oak (40% new). It is a wine of great
intensity, with an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of
camphor, graphite, blackberries, tar and charcoal. Rich, super-pure
fruit cascades over the palate of this opaque purple-colored, full-
bodied, voluptuously-textured Shiraz”. What more can I say? - $47.50
TRY THIS WINE FOR $5.00/Taste or $9.50/4 ounces
SATURDAY, October 28th
Noon – 5 PM
Free tasting
As usual we’ll have a couple of interesting wines open – I’ve yet
to decide which!
Looking forward to seeing you all,
Cheers,
