THIS WEEK’S CHEESE

TOMA PIEMONTESE is made from COW’S milk
BRILLO de TREVISO is a COW’S milk cheese which has been soaked in red
wine must
GUFANTI TARTUFO MOLITERNO is from Sardinia and is SHEEP’S milk,
blended with black truffles. The sales’ pitch says “Drink with your
best Nebbiolo or Barbera”. This cheese is not exactly inexpensive
and is the reason for the small price increase of our sampler plate.
SAMPLER PLATES $4.00

WINES OF PIEMONTE

Piemonte is one of my favorite wine regions, and the local food is
supposed to be wonderful. Pauline and I hope to visit the area next
year, celebrating ?? years of marriage. Unfortunately, many of the
wines need time to show their worth, but we have tried to find wines
that are forward for their age.
1. While many of you believe the first commandment of wine is that it
should be red, we have a white wine. To me, no overview of Piemonte
can ignore ARNEIS, one of the two great whites of Piemonte. The
grapes are grown in ROERO which is across the Tanaro river from
Barolo and Barbaresco. The grape was being ignored in the area until
the late 1960s when VIETTI brought it back to life. Their 2005 ROERO
ARNEIS is the finest Arneis I’ve tasted for a few years. It is not
inexpensive, but is good value - $20.00

2. Now to red wines and the “everyday red” of the region, BARBERA.
These days Barberas are all over the shop in style, many using new
barriques. The LA LUNA di ROSPO 2004 BARBERA d’ASTI just uses old
oak botti so accentuates the fruit rather than the wood. While many
Barberas from Asti are somewhat more rustic than those from Alba,
this tastes more like a wine from Alba with lush, ripe, berry fruit.
This wine has a gorgeous mouth feel, a great finish, and is the best
value Barbera I’ve tasted since I bought the shop. Thank you, Greg
Zancanella, for discovering this wine at the annual Italian Wine
Trade Show - $13.50

3. Now we move to the great grape of Piemonte, NEBBIOLO. We return
to VIETTI and their basic LANGHE NEBBIOLO, the 2003 PERBACO. While
VIETTI’S wines tend to need time to show their worth, this wine is
typical of the hot 2003 vintage in Europe. It has lots of ripe
fruit, but this is coupled with great structure and some tannins. It
is good to drink now, but will last for several years – it is like
drinking Barbaresco on the cheap! - $21.00

4. We stay with NEBBIOLO for our final wine of the flight to taste a
real BARBARESCO. MONTARIBALDI is another Greg Zancanella import and
the wines offer great value. The 2003 BARBARESCO PALAZZINA is much
more forward than normal for this bottling. It offers forward fruit
to drink now, but has the structure to last for years. The wine is a
regular “two glass” winner in Gambero Rosso. - $26.50 (note we also
have the single vineyard MONTARIBALDI 2001 BARBARESCO SORI MONTARALBI
in stock at $34.50)

This week we offer TWO PREMIUM POURS:

GATTINARA is a DOCG in the north of PIEMONTE, and its reds have to be
at least 90% NEBBIOLO. The ANTONIOLO 2001 SAN FRANCESCO vineyard is
100% NEBBIOLO, and is a good example of why many people compare
NEBBIOLO with PINOT NOIR. The wine has fabulous aromatics, is more
delicate on the palate than a typical Barolo, and is almost
Burgundian in structure. Fabulous value - $38.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces

Our second “Premium Pour” is the “King of Piemonte”, BAROLO. MAURO
MOLINO is a producer in LA MORRA whose single vineyard Barolos
regularly get “Three Glasses” in Gambero Rosso. However most of
their wines need some cellar time to show their worth. A few
vintages ago the winery decided to produce a Barolo that was more
approachable in its youth. This 2001 BAROLO is the third vintage of
this style. It was awarded “Two Glasses” in Gambero Rosso who said “…
fruity aromas, flowery notes of violet and spicy hints of tobacco.
The full palate shows great balance and a long, elegant finish.” I
could not agree more as I think this is the best value Barolo on the
market today - $32.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.50/Taste or $6.50/4 ounces

TASTE BOTH FOR $7.25
