PORTUGUESE TABLE WINES
  THIS WEEK’S CHEESE

I tried to find some Portuguese cheese for this week, but failed.
Whole Foods told me they did carry some but they did not sell. Hence,
what could I do but move to Portugal’s Iberian Peninsular neighbor,
Spain.
CAMPO de MONTALBAN is a blend of COW, SHEEP and GOAT milk.
MAHON from the island of MENORCA, is made from COW’S milk.
MAJORERO is from the CANARY ISLANDS and is from GOAT’S milk, but has
a much firmer texture than most goat cheese.
SAMPLE PLATES $3.00

Portugal for several years has been offering bargain, flavorful reds,
and now we are receiving some more up-market wines. This week’s
tasting will show some “bargain priced” wines, plus some more
expensive wines.
1. We start with what has been a perennial favorite at this store and
now has been discovered by Matt Kramer – we’ve carried every vintage
since I took over the store, so where were you Matt in 2003? CASA
SANTOS LIMA is based in the ESTREMADURA region, a large area on the
west coast. The QUINTA de BONS-VENTOS 2004 is a blend of several
native varietals including CASTELÃO, CAMARATE, TINTA MIÚDA and
TOURIGA NACIONAL. The wine offers lots of ripe black fruit balanced
by good acidity together with what Kramer calls “a gravelly
stoniness” - $8.50

2. Many Port producers are now making table wines and our next wine
comes from Port house DOW. The VALE do BOMFIM 2004 RESERVA is from
the DOURO region (of Port fame) and is a blend of 40% TOURIGO FRANCA,
40% TINTA RORIZ (Tempranillo) and 20% TINTA BARROCA. The wine offers
copious black fruit, an easy drinking softness and a long finish -
$13.50

3. We stay in the DOURO and with producer ALIANÇA, better known for
their Vinho Verde. However, their 2000 FORAL DOURO RESERVA is a
blend of several varietals and offers copious black fruit wrapped in
a modern oak cloak - $17.50

4. Our final wine of the basic flight is from the ALENTEJANO region
in the southeast of Portugal. The wine is a joint venture of
Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Château Lafite) and Portugal’s José
Barado. QUINTA do CARMO 2001 RESERVA is a blend of ARAGONEZ (local
name for TEMPANILLO), CABERNET SAUVIGNON. TRINCADEORA, ALICANTE AND
SYRAH. When I first tried this wine I found the oak too dominant,
but a year later this is wonderful wine. As Robert Parker would say,
“gobs of flavor for your buck”- $22.50

TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00

This week’s PREMIUM POUR we offer two wines:

Both wines are a result of a joint venture of BRUNO PRATS (of
Bordeaux fame) and the SYMINGTON FAMILY (of Port fame).

The 2002 POST SCRIPTUM de CHRYSEIA is a blend of TOURIGA NACIONAL and
TOURIGA FRANCA. The wine offers black fruit, spice and a great
texture with well integrated, but somewhat obvious oak. This is a
great mouthful that is drinking well today - $25.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.00/Taste or $5.00/4 ounces

This cooperation between Bordeaux and Portugal has produced a
phenomenal wine, the 2003 CHRYSEIA. This wine is 100% TOURIGA
NACIONAL and is almost black in color. It offers copious sweet
blackberry fruit, well-integrated new oak, beautiful balance and
length. When I tasted it I just said “WOW!”. It is hard to justify
the price, but… - $75.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $8.00/Taste or $15.00/4 ounces

TASTE BOTH FOR $10.00

SATURDAY, October 7th

  (Noon – 5 PM)

Free tasting

No need to travel across town to this weekend’s Greek Festival as we
will be going GREEK. SKOURAS makes some wonderful, but expensive
wines, but also makes fabulous value wines at a lower price point.
We will pour:

SKOURAS WHITE – a blend of RODITIS and MOSCOFILERO
SKOURAS RED – a blend of AGIORGITIKO and CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Both these wines are just $9.00/bottle

Looking forward to seeing you all,

Cheers,
