FRIDAY, November 24, 4:30 - 7:00pm
This weekend you may well become satiated with Pinot Noir so come and
taste something different – BORDEAUX (but remember we have a
selection of Oregon Pinot Noirs, including small quantities of hard
to find wines such as EVESHAM WOOD 2004 CUVÉE J and SEVEN SPRINGS).
This week we are offering a retrospective of a few 2000s (a great
vintage), a preview of 2005, and a sensational bargain from 2003.
Some of the 2000s have been in stock earlier, but now they have
additional bottle age. To go with these wonderful wines we offer:
THIS WEEK’ S CHEESE SAMPLER PLATE
CANTAL Cow’s
milk France
BRADEN FARM CHEDDAR Cow’s
milk England
SMOKED GOUDA Cow’s
milk Holland
SAMPLER PLATE $3.00
WINES OF BORDEAUX
Please note that the percentages of varietals refer to the producers’
vineyards and do not necessarily represent the final blend of the wines.
1. 2005 is supposed to be one of the great BORDEAUX vintages, and
based on the wines from minor Châteaux so far available, this
projection could be true. We have already offered the Château Pierre
Levée which was wonderful value at $13.00 (currently out-of-stock at
the importer), and now we offer CHÂTEAU TOUR SAINT-GEORGES 2005
which carries a basic BORDEAUX Appellation. I do not know where this
producer is in Bordeaux, but to me it seems as though it is a
CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT and CABERNET FRANC blend. It is not a big
wine, but Pauline and I drank a bottle with some grilled sausages and
it was a good match. A bargain - $9.00
2. We now go to 2000 and start with a wine we have offered in the
past. The CHÂTEAU NOAILLAC is a classic MÉDOC and has shed some of
its earlier tannins to reveal more luscious fruit. A blend of
CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT and CABERNET FRANC, this is a great
introduction to the MÉDOC - $18.00
3. From the HAUT MÉDOC we offer the 2000 CHÂTEAU HANTAILLAN. This
Cru Bourgeois producer is in the village of Cissac, bordering on some
of the great Saint Estephe vineyards. The vineyard planting is 48%
CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 42% MERLOT, 7% CABERNET FRANC and 3% PETIT
VERDOT, and the wine is aged in 30% new oak - $18.00
4. We now move to SAINT ESTÈPHE and CHÂTEAU TEYNAC 2000. In previous
years I’ve found this 2000 wine somewhat “inaccessible”, but when I
tasted it earlier this year, it had come out of its shell. 78%
CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 20% MERLOT and 2% PETIT VERDOT, the wine is aged
in 1/3 new oak barrels - $29.00
TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00
Once again we offer TWO PREMIUM POURS:
From the 2000 vintage we will taste LA PARDE de HAUT-BAILLY. This
is the “second wine” of CHÂTEAU HAUT-BAILLY which is in PESSAC
LÉOGNAN (used to be part of GRAVES). Made from 65% CABERNET
SAUVIGNON, 25% MERLOT and 10% CABERNET FRANC and aged in 50% new oak,
this wine exhibits the gravelly, dusty terroir of Graves. Great
value as compared with the Château’s main wine - $40.00
TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces
The next wine is from the hot 2003 vintage. CHÂTEAU PRIEURÉ-LICHINE
is a Fourth-Growth in the MARGAUX Appellation. The vineyards are
planted to 44% CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 44% MERLOT, 6% CABERNET FRANC and
6% PETIT VERDOT. This is a lush claret that is hard to resist (90
pts Wine Advocate), and is a bargain, for a limited time, at - $27.50
TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.00/Taste or $5.50/4 ounces
TASTE BOTH FOR $7.00
IF IT ARRIVES IN TIME, WE WILL ALSO BE OFFERING FREE TASTES OF A
SWEET BORDEAUX WHITE WINE.
SATURDAY, November 25th
Noon – 5 PM
Free tasting
As usual we will have two interesting wines open.
Looking forward to seeing you all,
Cheers,
