DOMAINE GREFFET 2004 POUILLY-FUISSÉ, BURGUNDY, FRANCE
POUILLY-FUISSÉ was the wine that introduced many Americans to WHITE
BURGUNDY. Unfortunately the French took advantage of its popularity
and they shipped anything that had Pouilly-Fuissé on the label, and
much of it was mediocre, over-priced wine. In Burgundy the wine
became known as Vin Amercaine, inferring that the Americans would buy
anything that said Pouilly-Fuissé on the label. In the 1980s/early
1990s I’d look to nearby villages such as Saint Veran for value-
priced wines in a similar style to Pouilly-Fuissé. There have always
been very good wines from the Appellation – if you want to pay $35/
bottle. It was lovely to find this wine which is under $20/bottle.
Burgundy producer MOILLARD contracts with DOMAINE GREFFET to produce
this wine. The wine offers good apple-pear fruit, subtle oak,
balancing acidity and a long finish. A BARGAIN WHITE BURGUNDY.

LIMERICK LANE 2003 ZINFANDEL COLLINS VINEYARD, RUSSIAN RIVER, CALIFORNIA
The 2002 vintage of this wine was a great success in the shop, and I
think the 2003 is even better. This vineyard is the winery’s “home”
vineyard with plantings dating back to 1910. The wine offers
raspberry and plum aromas; the palate is a little “jammy”, but this
is balanced by acidity and tannins. The finish has great length with
lingering spice. Most of you know I’m not the greatest fan of
Zinfandel, but this wine has a certain elegance about it, and is one
of the most food-friendly Zins I’ve tasted. Also the alcohol is
below 15%…

BARON and BARONESS LEVEL
VILLA WOLF 2005 PINOT GRIS, PFALZ, GERMANY
It is time for us to try a PINOT GRIS from GERMANY! VILLA WOLF is
owned by the great DR. ERNIE LOOSEN from the MOSEL region. The PFALZ
is further south and a warmer region. Stainless Steel fermented and
aged, this wine offer gobs of ripe fruit, an unctuous texture on the
palate, a touch of residual sugar matched by some balancing
acidity. This wine would be a good aperitif, but would also
accompany many foods.

TERRAPIN CELLARS 2005 PINOT NOIR, WILLAMETTE VALLEY, OREGON
These days the drinkable $15-$17 Oregon Pinot Noir has all but
disappeared, especially from “established” producers. However, there
are many unheralded producers, and some of them are making good
wine. This wine from TERRAPIN CELLARS is made from fruit from
GREENWOOD VINEYARD which is in the EOLA HILLS, planted in 1983. This
is a tasty, quaffable, Pinot Noir — lovely cherry fruit coupled with
modest oak (20% new), and good acidity. ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING
BARGAINS!
