THIS WEEK’S CHEESE SAMPLER PLATE
To go along with the “West Coast Wines” we will have a selection of
“West Coast Cheeses”. I’m going to Whole Paycheck Thursday evening to
choose some interesting cheeses. Estimated price:
SAMPLER PLATE $3.00
WEST COAST CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Is this the World Series of Cabernet – Washington vs. California? We
thought we would share the basic flight between our two neighboring
states.
1. AVILA has produced many wonderful value wines and this 2004 SANTA
BARBERA CABERNET SAUVIGNON is no exception. Matt Kramer reviewed
this wine in The Sunday Oregonian, and said it was fabulous value.
While the wine sees 40% new oak, the wine is devoid of an overly oak
flavor. There is lots of bright fruit coupled with refreshing
acidity, typical of a high elevation vineyard (3200 feet) - a
bargain at $10.00
2. We now move to our neighbors to the north and BARNARD GRIFFIN 2004
COLUMBIA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON. This winery consistently
produces great value wines. The Cabernet always has pure cassis
fruit coupled with subtle oak, and this vintage recently was the
second highest rated Cabernet in a Wine Spectators recent Value Issue
(89 points). - $15.00
3. We stay in WASHINGTON STATE to taste a wine from the 2001
vintage. POWERS, a winery in Kennewick, is over 20 years old. While
many of their wines are “average”, this RESERVE is great value. The
fruit comes from the CHAMPOUX vineyard. The wine has classic cassis
fruit, well-integrated oak, good balance and a long finish. It is a
wine to sip on the deck (when?…next spring?), or to accompany most
meats - $20.00
4. Most of the wines I wanted for this slot are sold-out, so I was
frustrated until I tasted this wine. TUDAL is a new producer to me,
but their 2002 NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON offers rich cassis
fruit, some noticeable oak, chewy tannins and good length. - $37.50
TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00
This week our PREMIUM POUR is:
We go back into history to taste BURGESS 1993 VINTAGE SELECTION NAPA
VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON. This wine amazed me – it has a spicy oak
nose coupled with cassis fruit, has much more fruit on the palate
than I expected, and is very elegant. The finish is also remarkable
- $48.50
TRY THIS WINE FOR $5.00/Taste or $10.00/4 ounces
SATURDAY, November 4th
Noon – 5 PM
Free tasting
As usual we’ll have a couple of interesting wines open:
For a WHITE we offer CARLOS ARANDA BLANCO which is from 100% PEDRO
XIMENEZ (a grape normally associated with sherry) from ARGENTINA. It
tastes like a dry sherry without the higher alcohol - $7.50
Our RED is a BEAUJOLAIS from MOILLARD, a Burgundy producer. Their
2004 BEAUJOLAIS VILLAGES is better than some CRU BEAUJOLAIS. Typical
of Beaujolais is has great fruit, but this wine has structure beyond
its price - $10.00
Looking forward to seeing you all,
Cheers,
Mick Beard
