CORNELL WINE COMPANY
PRODUTTORI del BARBARESCO 2001 FUTURES
Forget what The Wine Spectator said about the 2000 vintage in
Piemonte, 2001 is a much better vintage combining some of the fruit
forwardness of the 2000 vintage with the classic structure of the
1999 vintage. While the 2000 is a good “restaurant vintage” (i.e.
early drinking), many of the wines will never develop the
complexities that you expect in great Nebbiolo wines. Personally, I
think 1999 was a fabulous vintage, but many of the wines need a lot
of patience. My rule is “drink the 2000s, then the 2001s, and then
the 1999s”.
The Produttori will be releasing their “single vineyard” 2001s in
January 2007 - this is much later than normal. The reason is that
there will be no “single vineyard” wines from 2002 and 2003, and the
2004s will not be released until January 2009. The Produttori want
to make sure there is always some of these wines on the market.
Recently I had the pleasure of tasting all the nine Crus with Aldo
Vacca the Export Director for the Produttori. He is very excited
about the 2001 vintage, and having tasted the wines, I agree with
him. I did not buy any 2000s for my own cellar, but I’ll be buying
the 2001s. The big surprise to me was that the normal reticent Crus
such as Montifico and Montestefano were showing lots of opulent fruit
at this early stage, whereas the normally forward Ovello was somewhat
tighter than normal.
I’m now accepting futures orders on the following basis (order forms
are available in the shop – but you can email your requests and fill-
in an order form later) and orders are requested by the middle of
June (earlier ordering offers a better chance of availability):
1. Some of the wines are in short supply and I will not know my
allocation until mid-July. The Montefico is in very short supply and
the Asili and Rabajá are in short supply. I’ll allocate orders in
the sequence received.
2. This year the Produttori are NOT guaranteeing the exchange
rate and current pricing is based on $1.25 US to €1.00. If the local
distributor increases my cost, I’ll pass through that increase to my
customers with no profit margin added. This extra, if any, will be
paid when the wine arrives. If by chance the dollar makes comeback
and my cost is reduced, I’ll refund the savings to you.
3. Payment is in full with a valid credit card (or cash if you
prefer!). However no credit card will be charged, or checks cashed,
until I know what my allocation will be.
4. Orders can be for single bottles. Case orders, mixed or full,
will receive a 10% discount off these futures prices.
PRICING
ASILI or RABAJÁ $38.00/bottle
MOCCAGATTA, MONTEFICO, MONTESTEFANO, OVELLO, PAJÉ, PORA and RIO SORDO
$34.00/bottle
Magnums are available of MONTESTEFANO, OVELLO and RABAJÁ at twice the
750ml cost.
