Red Blends

I think many of the red blends produced in Washington and California
are much better value than the single varietal wines from the same
wineries. Maybe they are the barrels that do not make the main
wines, but at 50-60% off the price, I’ll take them.
1. We start in WASHINGTON’S COLUMBIA VALLEY and SAGELANDS 2001
FREDDIE’S BLEND. This winery is a consistent great value producer and
this blend of CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT and a little CABERNET FRANC
is fantastic value. It offers lots of ripe black fruit, soft
tannins, and a nice touch from the Cabernet Franc. Not a great wine,
but a fabulous wine at - $10.00

2. Now we move south to CALIFORNIA and another great value producer.
ARTESA wines have always represented good value, but their 2001
ELEMENTS has been reduced in price by a third, making it even better
value. A blend of CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, SYRAH and ZINFANDEL,
this wine offers gobs of spicy black fruit with a soft oak overtone -
$15.00

3. Back to WASHINGTON and the COLUMBIA VALLEY and MARK RYAN 2004 THE
DISSIDENT. This blend of CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT and CABERNET
FRANC is one of the most impressive blends in what I call the “Walla
Walla” style. It has lots of ripe fruit, noticeable oak, but manages
good balance. Only 7000 bottles produced - $25.00

4. We now move to WALLA WALLA itself and SAVIAH CELLARS. Their 2002
UNE VALLÉE was an enormous hit at last year’s Walla Walla tasting. A
very good customer says the 2003 is even better (I have not tasted
this vintage). So let’s all see exactly how good is this blend of
61% CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 29% MERLOT and 10% CABERNET FRANC. Based on
past vintages, this will be an elegant, balanced Bordeaux blend -
$28.75.

For our PREMIUM POUR we go back to CALIFORNIA:

Again, this is a wine recommended by a customer, but this time I’ve
tasted it. BENNETT LANE is a small NAPA VALLEY producer and their
2003 RED FEASTING WINE, called MAXIMUS, is a sumptuous blend.
Primarily CABERNET SAUVIGNON (63%) and SYRAH (24%), the wine also has
small amounts of MERLOT and PETIT VERDOT. The nose offers black
raspberry with touches of anise and oak. The palate is more like
black cherry with touches of mocha, and the finish is lush and long.
Spectacular value at - $28.50

TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.00/Taste or $6.00/4 ounces

SATURDAY, May 20th

From NOON – 5:00 PM we will have a few bottles open. With this hot
weather I thought it was time for dry Rosés. Although the forecast
is for a cooler weekend, I still plan a couple of Rosés:

ROUTAS 2005 ROUVIERE ROSÉ, CÔTEAUX VAROIS en PROVENCE - $10.75
VEGA SINDOA 2005 ROSÉ, NAVARRA - $6.75

However if is cold I’ll open a red!

Looking forward to seeing you all,

Cheers,

Mick
