  Syrah/Shiraz

Syrah, which is the grape of the Northern Rhône Valley, is now grown
in many regions. This week we will taste Syrah wines from Oregon,
California, Australia and the Rhône Valley. We will have two low
priced wines and two moderately priced wines – plus a Premium Pour.
1. We start in WESTERN AUSTRALIA and the FRANKLIN RIVER area.
FERNGROVE is a great value producer and their 2003 SHIRAZ is
excellent value. While obviously from Australia, it is not “over-the-
top” like many such wines are. It shows black plum fruit with a nice
spiciness and a long finish - $9.75

2. Now we come home to OREGON and Southern Oregon’s DEL RIO
vineyard. I’ve not been a fan of much of the fruit from this
vineyard as I feel it is somewhat over-priced for the simple nature
of the fruit. However ELK COVE has been buying some of the young
vine fruit, and their non-vintage LA SIRENNE SYRAH is wonderfully
complex for the price of the wine. The wine shows black fruit, a
touch of oak, and that touch of leather and bacon normally found in
Northern Rhône wines - $12.00

3. Moving south to CALIFORNIA we will taste a wine from a winery new
to the Oregon market. The MEYER FAMILY 2002 SYRAH is from YORKVILLE/
MENDOCINO, showing black fruit on the nose and a taste of blueberries
on the palate. The wine was aged 18 months in oak (40% new), and the
whole package is very elegant with great balance - $27.50

4. We now move to the natural home of SYRAH, the RHÔNE VALLEY.
CORNAS, a small village in the Northern Rhône valley, is famous for
its backward, slightly rustic, SYRAH. The best-known producer is
Auguste Clape. The DURANDS are a new producer for me, but Robert
Parker regularly rates their wines as “outstanding”. This 2001
CORNAS is ready to drink but will get even better with some
cellaring. It is already smooth and elegant, but also has the
classic Northern Rhône characteristics of leather, earth and smoky
bacon. Made to sell for $40.00 this wine is an importer close-out
and is a steal at $28.50.

For our PREMIUM POUR we stay in the RHÔNE VALLEY:

CAVE de TAIN l’HERMITAGE is the cooperative in the town of TAIN right
by the hill of HERMITAGE. Their 2000 HERMITAGE “GAMBERT de LOCHE” is
named after the founder of the Cave, and it is one of the best value
Hermitages I’ve tasted. The wine offers aromas of black fruits,
spice and bacon together with some vanillans from new oak barrels.
It is lush and velvety on the palate, but will get more complex over
the next few years - $43.50

TRY THIS WINE FOR $5.00/Taste or $9.00/4 ounces

SATURDAY, May 13th

We have two free treats for you:

wines.

From NOON – 5:00 PM we will have the CORNELL WINE CLUB SELECTIONS open.
