EARL and COUNTESS LEVEL
HIDALGO NV MANZANILLA “LA CIGARRERA”, Jerez, Spain
We thought it would be interesting to include a sherry as the white
wine this month. Sherry is made in southern Spain in an area between
Sevilla and Cádiz, with the center being the town of Jerez de la
Frontera. Sherries can range in style from delicate and dry to full-
bodied sweet wines. “Natural” sherries are dry and delicate, and
MANZANILLA is the finest and lightest of them all. It is made around
the coastal town of Sanlùcar de Barrameda. Many people (including
me) say you can taste the salt of the sea in Mazanilla, making it a
wonderful accompaniment to shellfish tapas, as well as being a lovely
aperitif. In tapas bars all over Spain, people drink sherry with
food, so do not think of it as only an aperitif. We are supplying
two 375ml bottles this month as the wine is delicate and should be
consumed soon after being opened.

DOMAINE SORIN 2003 BANDOL, Bandol, France
To me, BANDOL is the best wine region of PROVENCE for red wine,
mainly because the principal grape is MOUVÈDRE. The most famous
estate is DOMAINE TEMPIER, but their wines are expensive and take a
long time to reach their peak. LUC SORIN, owner/wine maker, was
raised in Burgundy but “went south” and founded DOMAINE SORIN in ST.
CYR SUR MER which is northwest of the town of BANDOL. His BANDOL is
a blend of 85% MOUVÈDRE, 10% CARIGNAN and 5% SYRAH. Like all
MOUVÈDRE-based wines, this wine has an almost “feral herbiness” which
makes the nose unforgettable. This is followed by rich black fruit
and substantial tannins. This wine would be wonderful now with game,
but give it some cellar time and it will match with all red meats.

BARON and BARONESS LEVEL
APOLLONI 2005 PINOT GRIS, WILLAMETTE VALLEY, OREGON
APOLLONI is a relatively new Oregon winery producing small quantities
of PINOT GRIS and PINOT NOIR. Last Thanksgiving their 2003 PINOT
NOIR was very successful in the shop, one reason being WILDWOOD’S
CORY SCHREIBER recommending it as a great match for a traditional
Thanksgiving turkey meal. The 2004 PINOT GRIS was very good, but the
2005 is better. Stainless steel fermented and aged, the wine offers
rich, ripe fruit typical of an Oregon Pinot Gris, and this is
balanced by moderate acidity and a citrus finish. The wine avoids
the noticeable residual sugar of some Oregon Pinot Gris.

DOMAINE de NIZAS 2001 ROUGE, CÔTEAUX du LANGUEDOC, FRANCE
DOMAINE de NIZAS is owned by the founders of Napa Valley’s CLOS du
VAL and brings together the tradition of the Languedoc and the more
modern techniques of California. The Domaine is on the hillsides
outside the village of NIZAS which is in the Vin de Pays area of CAUX
in the middle of the LANGUEDOC. The Domaine makes several wines and
this is the one that carries the CÔTEAUX du LANGUEDOC appellation.
It is a blend of 60% SYRAH, 35% MOUVÈDRE and 5% GRENACHE. The wine
has an intriguing nose of black fruit and that classic South of
France feeling of warm earth and herbs. The palate is full-bodied
and reflects the nose. The finish of spicy black fruit is very long
for a wine of this price.
