Wines for Your July 4th Cookout
This week we will taste some good, but inexpensive, wines that will
go with your Independence Day Cookouts. To many, this is a “beer
holiday”, but modestly priced wines go well with “grill food”, and
you can serve them to beer drinkers without draining your wallet. Of
course, if you are grilling serious food, we offer a serious Oregon
Pinot Noir as our Premium Pour.
1. While working at the grill you need a good white to keep your
temperature down! APOLLONI is a relatively new Oregon winery
producing small quantities of PINOT GRIS and PINOT NOIR. Last
Thanksgiving their 2003 PINOT NOIR was very successful in the shop,
one reason being WILDWOOD’S CORY SCHREIBER recommending it as a great
match for a traditional Thanksgiving turkey meal. The 2004 PINOT
GRIS was very good, but the 2005 is better. Stainless steel
fermented and aged, the wine offers rich, ripe fruit typical of an
Oregon Pinot Gris, and this is balanced by moderate acidity and a
citrus finish. The wine avoids the noticeable residual sugar of some
Oregon Pinot Gris- $14.50
2. As most of you know, this shop is a great believer in dry rosé
wines. Such wines are ideal for what we hope will be a warm July
4th We have a wonderful selection of rosé wines, but this week we
are staying American. Pauline and I visited ELK COVE last Sunday
(yes, in 100+F heat) and thought their 2005 PINOT NOIR ROSÉ was
wonderful. It offers strawberry fruit coupled with a touch of
minerals and great balancing acidity. Wonderful value - $13.50
3. Maybe MERLOT is not in style these days, but now some wonderful,
low-priced, wines are available that are not simple, sweet, fruit
bombs. CYCLES GLADIATOR is a relatively new label from CALIFORNIA
and Matt Kramer wrote-up the wines a few weeks ago in The Sunday
Oregonian. The 2004 CENTARL COAST MERLOT offers good fruit but also
a complexity not normally associated with a wine at this price - $8.00
4. What is July 4th without a ZINFANDEL? It seems there must be a
glut of Zinfandel in California as several reasonably priced wines
are available. At the $10 level the CLAY STATION 2004 OLD VINE
ZINFANDEL from LODI takes some beating. A product of the Delicato
family, the wine offers copious fruit which is coupled with good
structure - $10.00
5. Finally we have a smoky wine to go with your smoky food. The
NOVELTY HILL 2003 SYRAH is from WASHINGTON’S COLUMBIA VALLEY. To me
it offers a great mix between the typical fruity west coast Syrah
with some of the smoke and earthiness of the Rhône Valley - $20.00
TRY THESE FIVE WINES FOR $10.00
For our PREMIUM POUR we offer a great OREGON PINOT NOIR:
Recently I tasted all of ST. INNOCENT’S just released single-vineyard
wines from 2004. They are all excellent. We have in stock wines
from TEMPERANCE HILL, SHEA and WHITE ROSE vineyards. We will taste
the last which is the most expensive because White Rose fruit is
expensive! However I think it is worth the extra price. Great black
cherry fruit, well-integrated oak, and none of the Syrah-wannabe
flavors of too many Oregon Pinot Noirs - $38.50
TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces
THIS FRIDAY IS THE LAST CHANCE FOR ROSÉ WINE JUNE SPECIAL! 10% OFF
SINGLE BOTTLES, 15% OFF SIX OR MORE. WE STILL HAVE A GOOD SELECTION
INCLUDING FOUR WHICH ARRIVED THIS WEEK.
SATURDAY, July 1st
We will be closed!
