Wines for Your Father – or Yourself

This week our flight will comprise wines at the “Premium Pour” price
level and you will be able to taste them individually, or be able to
buy the complete flight of tastes at a discount. We did this last
year, and it was very popular—not just with Dads!.
1. We start in OREGON with a new release from WINTER’S HILL. Their
wines are getting better, maybe a result of their Burgundian-trained
French wine maker, Delphine. She is now the owner’s daughter-in-
law. Russell, the owner’s son met her when he spent a year in
Burgundy. The 2004 vintage was the first vintage where she was here
for the crush. They have bottled two PINOT NOIRS from this vintage
and they are the best PINOT NOIRS yet from this producer. There is
the “regular” bottling, but we will taste the POMMARD CLONE CUVÉE
bottling which has been made from some of the oldest vines on the
property. This is a beautifully balanced wine that is more
Burgundian in character than many of the “syrah-wannabes” being
produced in Oregon and labeled as Pinot Noir - $36.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.00/Taste or 7.00/4 ounces

2. We stay in OREGON (sort of) for the next wine. Rich Cushman’s
VIENTO winery is based in Hood River, but much of his fruit comes
from WASHINGTON. Rich makes good SANGIOVESE and now he has made an
equivalent of a “Super Tuscan”. His 2002 VENTO is a blend of 67%
SANGIOVESE, 17% SYRAH and 16% MERLOT. The wine is one smooth
mouthful of well-integrated oak, berry fruit (leaning towards black
fruit), and spice. The finish has great length. Only 40 cases were
made - $30.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.50/Taste or $6.00/4 ounces

3. Having tasted a “Super Tuscan” knock-off, we now try the real
thing. The TENUTA VALDIPIATTA 1999 TRINCERONE is unusual in that it
contains no SANGIOVESE. It is a blend of 60% CANAIOLO and 40%
MERLOT. The wine was aged for 12 months in two-year-old barriques of
Allier oak. Now over six years old, the wine is just coming into its
own. The nose is very similar to a Sangiovese-based Tuscan wine, and
then the Merlot shows its presence on the palate and finish. Right
through the wine is a slight earthiness found in a typical Brunello.
A very interesting wine! - $35.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.00/Taste or $7.00/4 ounces

4. For the final wine in the main flight we offer the recently-
released CHÂTEAU-FORTIA 2004 CHÂTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE CUVÉE DU BARON. A
blend of almost equal parts GRENACHE, SYRAH and MOUVÈDRE, the wine is
not as fruit-forward as the voluptuous and intense 2003, but in some
ways is more classic. It is still rich and dense, offering lots of
black fruit, but is more elegant than hedonistic. The nose and palate
have intriguing touches of licorice and herbes de Provence. It
should drink well for 7-8 years - $39.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.50/Taste or $8.00/4 ounces

This week we offer a “SUPER” PREMIUM POUR!

Last week we tasted Bordeaux, this week we add a “Bordeaux knock-
off”. The FLORA SPRINGS 2001 TRILOGY is, as the winery says,
inspired by the wines of the Haut-Médoc. From the RUTHERFORD region
of the NAPA VALLEY, it is a blend of CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT and
CABERNET FRANC with tiny amounts of PETIT VERDOT and MALBEC. While
it could never be taken as a Bordeaux, it is an elegant, complex red
blend, more to Bordeaux in style than anything coming out of, say,
Walla Walla - $54.00

TRY THIS WINE FOR $6.00/Taste or $11.00/4 ounces

SAVE $2.00, TRY ALL FIVE WINES FOR $20.00

Reminder – Many other special wines for that Special Dad!

SATURDAY, June 17th

From NOON – 5:00 PM we will have a couple of wines open for FREE
TASTING.

From ITALY’S VENEZIA-GIULIA we offer RUFFINO 2002 PINOT GRIGIO
“LUMINA del BORGO”. Tuscan-based Ruffino own the Lumina estate in
Venezia, and this Pinot Grigio offers lots of fresh fruit and then
the wine finishes with a classic Italian minerally dry finish. Was
$14.00, now wonderful value at $10.00

For a red we go to SPAIN and another stunning bargain from that
country. The CARRO 2004 TINTO is from YECLA (a small region inland
of the city of Alicante) and is a blend of 50% MONASTRELL, 20% SYRAH,
20% GRENACHE and MERLOT. This is a lush, ripe mouthful of black
fruit and spice - $9.25

Looking forward to seeing you all,

Cheers,

Mick
