OUR ANNUAL TASTING WITH EWALD MOSELER

Once again we have the privilege of having EWALD MOSELER in the store
to talk about his wines. EWALD single-handedly developed the German
and Austrian wine market in Portland. Originally we were going to
mix GERMAN AND AUSTRIAN wines this week, but EWALD decided to
contrast the latest trend in GERMANY for trocken (dry) wines with the
traditional style of German wines. I have not tasted these wines as
they were chosen by Ewald, so you do not have to endure my usual
tasting notes! The basic flight will comprise two DRY RIESLINGS and
two “NORMAL” RIESLINGS. All wines are from the 2004 vintage.
1. We start in the MOSEL with SCHMITGES GRAUSCHIEFER RIESLING TROCKEN
- $13.00

2. We stay in the MOSEL for a very interesting wine, a SPÄTLESE
TROCKEN – i.e. the RIESLING grapes are picked at the Spätlese
ripeness, but the wine is vinted dry. The wine is produced by
CLEMENS BUSCH from the PÜNDERICHER MARIENBURG vineyard - $23.50

3. Remaining in the MOSEL, we will taste the MÖNCHHOF ESTATE RIESLING
- $16.00

4. For the final wine of the basic flight we move to the SAAR area to
taste the VON HÖVEL OBEREMMELER HÜTTE RIESLING SPÄTLESE. Earlier
this year this wine received a good review in Tanzer’s International
Wine Cellar: “Aromas of white peach, ripe cherry and nut oil.
Bright, crisp apple fruit is accompanied by an almost salty
minerality. Possesses just enough creamy sweetness to assure an
appealing finish” - $26.00

TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00

For our PREMIUM POUR we return to the MOSEL.

Our finale is a top-notch SPÄTLESE. The REINHOLD HAART 2004
PIESPORTER GOLDTRÖPFCHEN “ERSTE LAGE” has received great reviews in
The Wine Spectator “…very expressive, with good sense of place. It
shows harmony and great length. Drink now through 2020. 93 points”
and the International Wine Cellar “…honeyed and rich, this Spätlese
is kept alive by its brisk acidity. Conveys clear, refreshing slate
character on the spicy finish. 90 points” - $37.50

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.00/Taste or $7.50/4 ounces

SATURDAY, July 29th

Noon – 5:00PM

As usual we will have a couple of interesting wines open for FREE
TASTING:

For a WHITE we offer a GAVI di GAVI from PIEMONTE in ITALY. Made
from the CORTESE grape, GAVI is the best expression of the varietal
which is also grown around Lake Garda. The nose offers perfumes of
apples and apricots, good fruit on the palate, and a long finish with
an attractive saline quality. - $13.50

For a RED we offer a BONARDA from ARGENTINA. This old PIEMONTESE
grape has made a mark in ARGENTINA. I have two different producers
on order, and I’m not which will arrive in time for Saturday.
However the wine will be well under $10.00.

Looking forward to seeing you all,

Cheers,

Mick
