July 28 - German Wines with Ewald Moseler
August 4 – Spanish Wine
August 11 – Wines from the Mediterranean
August 18 – California Pinot Noir
August 25 – Wines of Walla Walla
FRIDAY, July 21st, 4:30 - 7:00pm
It’s HOT out there, so come into air-conditioned CORNELL WINE COMPANY
and taste big reds – ZINFANDEL.
OK, if I’d known it was going to be about 100°F I might have chosen a
different wine, but what is wrong with fruity and spicy wine to
complement the heat? Also remember that during these hot days we
still have some stunning dry rosés and refreshing, low alcohol
Moscato d’Asti.
1. ZINGARO is a new producer to me, and I understand it is an “out-
crop” of the PARDUCCI family. The 2003 BENCHLAND ZINFANDEL from
MENDOCINO is a bargain wine offering lots of brambly, spicy fruit
with some noticeable tannins - $12.00
2. We have used the IRONSTONE basic ZINFANDEL in the past and this
2003 OLD VINES RESERVE from LODI is a big step up. The wine offers
lots of black fruit coupled with spices and a very long finish. This
is a beautifully balanced Zin with modest alcohol (14.5%) - $17.50
3. We now go to the NAPA VALLEY for NAPA CELLARS 2003 ZINFANDEL. I
do not normally think of NAPA for great ZINFANDEL, but this wine
comes from grapes grown on the hillsides rather than the valley
floor. This is probably my favorite wine of the tasting as it offers
beautifully balanced black fruit, spice, oak and a great finish - $19.75
4. As Pauline will tell you, I’m not the greatest fan of ZINFANDEL
but I love RIDGE wines. Maybe this is because most RIDGE ZINFANDELS
often have other grapes blended into the wines. Such is the case
with the RIDGE 2003 INDEPENDENCE SCHOOL which is 88% ZINFANDEL, 9%
CARIGNAN and 3% PETITE SIRAH. The wine offers lots of spice to the
rich fruit – my original notes say “not for the mainstream Zin
drinkers”, so what do you think? - $19.75
TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00
For our PREMIUM POUR we go back to the NAPA VALLEY:
STORYBOOK MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS is a new producer for me, and their
ZINFANDELS are impressive. The EASTERN EXPOSURE is terrific, but I
found it hard to justify the price ($40+). The 2003 MAYACAMAS RANGE
offers most of the benefits of the other wine at a much lower cost.
Grown on volcanic soils, this wine is a very elegant ZINFANDEL,
offering spicy, opulent (but not jammy) fruit, together with great
length. This is one of the most “food friendly” zinfandels I’ve
tasted - $27.50
TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.00/Taste or $5.50/4 ounces
SATURDAY, July 22nd
Noon – 5:00PM
As usual we will have a couple of interesting wines open for FREE
TASTING:
For a WHITE we offer a bargain PINOT GRIGIO from TRENTINO in ITALY.
With the price of many Oregon Pinot Gris going through the roof, the
PRAVIS 2005 is a stunning bargain - $10.00
For a RED we offer Il PORTILLO 2002 TEMPRANILLO from MENDOZA in
ARGENTINA. This is the “second label” of SALENTEIN WINERY and while
the main wines sell for about $16.00+, the IL PORTILLO range are
stunning bargains at $8.00
Looking forward to seeing you all,
Cheers,
Mick
