WINES of the SOUTHERN RHÔNE VALLEY

Although Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines are getting expensive (but are
worth the money), there are still many bargains from this area of
France. Like any major wine area, it produces many mediocre wines,
but this is one wine area that can serve up gems at moderate cost.

1. We start in the CÔTEAUX du TRICASTIN that is an area on the east
bank of the river, south of Montélimar. The DOMAINE SAINT LUC 2004
is a typical great value Rhône wine. It offers lots of black
raspberry fruit upfront (from GRENACHE) and then balances this with
spice on a fairly long finish - $9.50

2. CHAPOUTIER is one of the great Rhône producers – based in Tain in
the Northern Rhône the winery produces wine from wonderful Hermitage
to great Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Their “entry level” wine from the
Southern Rhône is the BELLERUCHE CÔTES-du-RHÔNE. The 2003 is a blend
of approximately 80% GRENACHE and 20% SYRAH from vineyards around the
lovely villages of SABLET and SÉGURET. This wine shows much red
fruit – raspberry and Morello cherries – but this is coupled with a
great spicy finish - $11.00
3. FERAUD-BRUNEL is a joint venture of LAURENCE FERAUD (wine maker at
PEGAU) and ANDRE BRUNEL (wine maker at LES CAILLOUX). They buy
grapes from growers who have been set strict viticultural
guidelines. Their 2003 VACQUERAS shows a slightly more lush, modern
style (the hot 2003 vintage) than wines from the two “parent”
estates, but could no way be confused with the New World. A blend of
approximately 80% GRENACHE, 15% SYRAH and 5% MOUVÈDRE, this is a wine
that could benefit from a little more time in the cellar. Current
stock is all that is available of this vintage - $26.00

4. On our one visit to the Rhone Valley in 1992 I had great fun
visiting wineries while Pauline did her thing at the conference she
was attending in Avignon. One of my highlights was visiting the Cave
in GIGONDAS. As a result I have an attraction to the wines of this
village. The DOMAINE PESQUIER 2003 GIGONDAS is an exceptional wine.
It is a blend of approximately 75% GRENACHE, 20% SYRAH and 5%
MOUVÈDRE, and offers lots of black fruit with a substantial backbone
of tannins that are just resolving. There is a touch of gaminess
that makes the wine very interesting - $25.00

TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00
For this week’s PREMIUM POUR we offer:

DOMAINE du GALET des PAPES 2003 CHÂTEAUNEUF-du-PAPE which is typical
of the “fruit-forward” wines from the 2003 vintage – it shouts “Drink
me now”. It offers sweet cherries, strawberries and spice box in a
very evolved style. Robert Parker called it “…seductive, with soft,
plump, round flavors, medium to full body…” - $41.50

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.75/Taste or $8.50/4 ounces

NB: All prices are subject to change without notice. The above
information is based on verbal information from distributors, and
actual wine prices will depend on the price invoiced at delivery to
Cornell Wine Company.
