  SANGIOVESE-BASED WINES

Sangiovese and Nebbiolo are two grapes that to me have not found a
real home outside of their native Italy. This week we will pour
several different Sangiovese wines from Italy and also throw a
California wine into the mix.
1. We start in the VAL di CORNIA which is on the coast of TUSCANY
almost due west of Montalcino. The GUALDO del RE 2003 ELISEO is a
blend of 80% SANGIOVESE and 20% CANAIOLO, and the wine is very
similar to many Chiantis. I was not fond of this 2003 when it was
released, but after several more months in the bottle, the wine is
wonderful - $13.50

2. After TOSCANA we move south to UMBRIA. Long known for the white
wine ORVIETO, it is now becoming known for red wine. The greatest
reds are from the local grape SAGRANTINO, but these can be very
expensive. However, several producers are making “Chianti knock-
offs”. The TENUTA le VELETTE 2004 ROSSO di SPICCA is a blend of 85%
SANGIOVESE and 15% CANAIOLO and is more earthy than most “modern”
Chiantis. It represents wonderful value relative to Toscana - $12.50

3. One cannot have a SANGIOVESE tasting without a classic CHIANTI
CLASSICO. The LE CINCOLE 2003 is from a producer who is a
traditionalist and will not add “foreign” grapes such as Merlot to
the original red grapes SANGIOVESE, CANAIOLO AND COLORINO. This wine
is 90+% SANGIOVESE with small amounts of the other two. I would have
taken the wine as a 2001 as it has better structure than many of the
super-ripe 2003s. While it does have lots of ripe fruit, there is a
balance and elegance not found in some 2003s. FABULOUS VALUE - $18.75

4. The final wine of the flight is from CALIFORNIA. The LAGO di
MERLO 2003 DRY CREEK VALLEY SANGIOVESE is one of the best USA
SANGIOVESE wines I’ve tasted. The previous vintage had lots of oak,
but the winery has cut back on the new oak. While not a Toscana
wine, it at least tastes of Sangiovese! - $20.00

TRY THESE FOUR WINES FOR $10.00

This week we offer one PREMIUM POUR:

Probably the greatest Toscana wines are BRUNELLO di MONTALCINO, but
these wines tend to be expensive. Made from SANGIOVESE GROSSO, the
wines have a leathery, earthy quality, making them the most complex
wines from Sangiovese. The 2000 vintage was more fruit-forward than
normal and the CANALICCHO 2000 is drinking beautifully. The local
distributor has it on special, so the wine is FABULOUS VALUE - $37.50

TRY THIS WINE FOR $4.00/Taste or $7.50/4 ounces

SATURDAY, September 2nd

Noon – 5:00PM

As usual we will have a couple of interesting wines open for free
tasting – we will have one red and one white, but I’ve not made the
decision as to which!
Cheers,

Mick
