WINES FROM WALLA WALLA WINERIES
Walla Walla is a rapidly growing American Viticultural Area, and
while there are many lovely wines being produced, many producers have
big egos when it comes to pricing. Our tasting will feature wines
from Walla Walla wineries, but some wines will carry a Columbia
Valley AVA as these often offer a better value than the wines from
the Walla Walla AVA. Also several wines will be blends that tend to
offer better value than single varietal wines.
1. The Walla Walla AVA covers both the Washington and Oregon sides of
the Columbia River and we start in OREGON at ZERBA CELLARS. We have
carried several of their wines in the past, and now offer their red
blend, the 2004 WILD Z. This used to be called WILD THING but Carol
Shelton objected as she has been producing a “Wild Thing” Zinfandel
for several years. The wine is a WALLA WALLA blend of CABERNET
SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, CABERNET FRANC and SYRAH - $19.50
2. From a Bordeaux-style blend we move to a Rhône Valley blend, made
by the LATITUDE 46 winery. Their 2005 CLIFTON CUVÉE is a COLUMBIA
VALLEY blend of GRENACHE and SYRAH. The wine shows lots of black
raspberry fruit from the Grenache grape with just a touch of oak from
the time spent in 1 year-old French oak barrels. $18.50
3. We now go to a relatively “old timer” from the WALLA WALLA AVA,
SEVEN HILLS WINERY. The 2002 WALLA WALLA CABERNET SAUVIGNON offers a
wonderful combination of cassis fruit, oak and tannins. The whole
package has a certain elegance to it and has great length on the
finish. The wine shows the expertise and experience of the winery –
they know what they are doing - $29.00
4. The final wine of the flight is from COUGAR CREST, and is their
2003 ANNIVERSARY CUVÉE. This is all WALLA WALLA ESTATE fruit, a
blend of CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT and PETIT VERDOT. Typical of the
winery, the wine spent 20 months in new French oak, which shows in
the wine. The wine is big, has gobs of fruit, and noticeable
vanillans. For me, the wine is nearly “over the top”, but in
addition to its bigger-than-life personality, there is a smokiness
and then touches of coffee on the finish which give the wine an
intriguing complexity - $30.00

This week we offer an EXTRA POUR:
We go back to ZERBA CELLARS on the Oregon side of the river. Their
2003 CABERNET SAUVIGNON has won many awards – Platinum and Double
Gold – and was a great success when Mark Retz from the winery poured
it one Saturday in the shop. Very little is left, so buy it while
you can - $30.0
TRY THIS WINE FOR $3.50/Taste or $6.00/4 ounces
SATURDAY, August 26th
Noon – 5:00PM
As usual we will have a couple of interesting wines open for free
tasting, and this week we look to Bordeaux:
For a white we will have CHÂTEAU RECOUGNE 2004 BLANC. This is the
white wine from one of our favorite producers of red Bordeaux. It is
100% SAUVIGNON BLANC and offers a touch of gooseberry flavors (but it
is no Kiwi wine), together with a great mouth feel which is coupled
with a crisp, long finish. This is a very refreshing wine for
sipping on its own, or to accompany seafood, poultry and salads -
$9.75 (remember during August all Sauvignon Blanc wines are 10% off,
or 15% off six or more bottles).
Our red comes from the CÔTES de CASTILLON (just to the east of SAINT-
EMILION) and is our first wine from the highly hyped 2005 vintage.
If the 2005 CHÂTEAU LA PIERRE LEVÉE is any indication of the vintage,
the hype is well justified. This wine, which is mainly CABERNET
FRANC, offers lots of ripe, rich fruit, good balance and a long
finish. AMAZING VALUE - $13.00
Looking forward to seeing you all,
Cheers,
Mick
